About Us Saint George’s School (SGS) is an independent, non-religious K–12 college preparatory school located on the Little Spokane River just north of Spokane. Founded in 1955, SGS enrolls approximately 350 students across three divisions—Lower School (K–5), Middle School (6–8), and Upper School (9–12). Position Overview We are seeking an experienced and dynamic Controller to join the SGS community. This is an exempt level full time position.
Essential Responsibilities
Perform general accounting functions, including journal entries, review of accounts payable, and processing cash receipts, payroll and tuition billing.
Process monthly payroll, manage employee retirement system, and paid time off.
Manage employee health insurance, tax forms, records, and files.
Monitor accounts receivable aging and communicate with delinquent account holders
Collaborate with the Chief Financial Officer to maintain accurate accounting processes and systems.
Ensure the integrity of the internal control structure by maintaining orderly records of financial transactions, in compliance with school policies and local, state, and federal requirements
Ensure strict confidentiality of financial data and information.
Work with accountants on annual preparation of Tax form 990 and annual audit.
Follow best practices and legal compliance to ensure that the school is compliant with current standards and requirements. Maintain accurate records and systems.
Prepare and file quarterly taxes.
Lead month-end closing processes, including preparation of journal entries, reconciliations, account analysis, and financial statements.
Coordinate with the Director Human Resources to monitor finance and payroll compliance best practices to ensure the school is following current industry processes and procedures.
Ensure the school maintains its tax exempt-status on a federal, state, and local level.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in accounting, business administration or mathematics preferred. Will consider equivalent work experience.
A minimum of two years business management, accounting, or bookkeeping experience for a school or similar sized non-profit (501(c)3) organization.
Knowledge of non-profit accounting preferred.
Ability to get along well and communicate positively with team members and school community.
High level of written and verbal communication skills.
Ability to work collaboratively with a diverse team of people.
Ability to multi-task, respond with flexibility to changing needs, and maintain positive and professional attitude even under pressure.
Ability to meet deadlines.
Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite as well as the school's accounting, payroll, and billing systems, including Paylocity for payroll processing.
