The Upper Campus of Sierra Canyon seeks a dynamic and experienced Math instructor for Middle and Upper School for the 2026 - 2027 school year.
Teaching duties will include five sections of mathematics. Although the hiring committee and school are seeking the best teacher, initial preference favors candidates who possess experience teaching at different levels Prealgebra through Calculus.
Chair Responsibilities:
Among other duties, a Chair’s main responsibilities include:
Supporting and furthering the mission of the math department;
Working with administration to craft staffing models, horizontal and vertical alignment of curriculum, and best practices of teaching and learning within the classroom;
Helping with hiring, observing, and professionally developing math faculty;
Presiding over math department meetings and being a liaison between administration and the department;
Chairing readiness and placement for the department during school year and summer;
Coordinate substitutes internally for the department.
Teaching Responsibilities:
A competitive candidate must be an inspiring educator who is passionate about teaching mathematics in a manner that effectively reaches students;
The candidate must also demonstrate an ability to work collaboratively on team teaching and horizontal and vertical alignment;
Teachers are expected to meet with students outside of class for support, communicate effectively with students, parents, and colleagues, and contribute to the Mathematics Department by attending meetings, working on signature events like Pi Day, et al.
Outside of the classroom, teachers are encouraged to lead clubs, engage with students, attend outdoor education trips, etc.;
Other responsibilities include those that are normally part of a private independent school commitment such as weekly duties and positive interactions with students, parents, colleagues as well as membership in the community by attending different events.
Competitive candidates hold many experiences and possess many of the following qualities and experiences:
A masters' degree (preferred)
Experience teaching in independent schools and experience as a Chair
The interest, initiative, and energy to thrive in a lively and fast-paced academic community
Drive to continually invest in professional development opportunities and growth
A sense of humor, humility, and the ability to work as part of a team within one’s own division, as a member of the Math department and as an integral part of the faculty
Sierra Canyon School is a nonprofit independent, nondenominational, coeducational day school in the northern San Fernando Valley area of Los Angeles. With an enrollment of 1,150 students in grades PK-12, admission is selective. Sierra Canyon School is located on 42 beautiful, rustic acres and has two campuses across the street from each other: the Lower Campus for students in grades Pre-Kindergarten through Six and the state-of-the-art Upper Campus for students in grades Seven through Twelve. Students of color comprise over 50% of the student body, 10% are international students, and students reside in 102 different zip codes. There are roughly 500 students on the Lower Campus and 670 students on the Upper Campus with 134 students in the Class of 2026.
