Harbor Day School, an independent K-8 school in Corona del Mar, California, is seeking a long-term substitute for a 7th and 8th Grade Science teaching position. The position start date will be sometime early this spring and goes until the end of the school year. Middle School Science at Harbor Day is a rigorous spiral curriculum emphasizing concepts mainly pertaining to Life and Physical Science. Candidates should have a science degree or a degree in a closely related field and have a solid understanding of the Next Generation Science Standards. The ideal candidate will have a strong knowledge of biological systems, cell biology, classical mechanics and physical science. Additionally, the ideal candidate must be able to develop engaging and inquiry-based, innovative lessons that allow students to grow academically, socially and emotionally.
Primary Job Responsibilities:
Follow daily lesson plans and learning activities for 7th and 8th grade students based on national, local and school standards in science education and research
Deliver high-quality, engaging instruction in the form of discussion, direct teaching, demonstrations and independent laboratory practice using a variety of proven methods
Evaluate student performance on tasks established by the standards using different methods such as observation, performance-based tasks or other standard test practices
Incorporate technology and hands-on learning experiences in the classroom with enthusiasm
Serve as an advisor to a group of middle school students
