Washington Montessori School (WMS) seeks an experienced middle school Spanish teacher to join our program for the 2026-2027 school year. Montessori teacher credentials are welcome but not required. Located in Litchfield County, CT, WMS is less than an hour from Great Barrington, MA, less than two hours from NYC, and an easy day trip to Boston.
Founded in 1965, Washington Montessori School exists to educate children and to teach and nurture the skills necessary for success in a changing world through a foundation of Montessori philosophy and principles and best educational practices. WMS also upholds the highest standards of independent school education as articulated in the Standards of the Connecticut Association of Independent Schools, Principles of Good Practice of the National Association of Independent Schools, and the American Montessori Society’s Philosophy and Practice and Code of Ethics.
Successful candidates will join a dynamic, supportive, and forward-thinking teaching community of over 50 adults serving 270 students from 18 months through 8th grade. This is a 10-month, full-time position (September to June) with competitive salary and benefits.
Responsibilities:
Create an organized, warm learning environment for students in grades 6-8 for students to learn Spanish through the Spanish I level over three years and to learn organizational, social-emotional, and practical life skills.
Possess the desire and capacity to learn about Montessori education and to work collaboratively with students, parents, and colleagues in line with our mission.
Serve as an advisor to a group of Middle School students.
Collaborate with colleagues across disciplines and grade levels.
Demonstrate a genuine passion for and command of the subject matter and enthusiasm for teaching middle school students.
Scaffold and differentiate instruction for a range of learners.
Lead students by example and with empathy, building a healthy and positive culture that can weather and grow through conflict.
Build resilient relationships, uphold rules and standards, and resolve conflicts among students through student-centered and restorative approaches.
Possess a commitment to implementing best practices for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, and willingness to learn about and enact the Montessori values of peace and justice.
Cultivate and maintain supportive relationships with students, colleagues, and families; follow up regularly with parents on students’ academic progress, social growth, and learning needs at designated times of the year and through additional meetings as necessary.
Demonstrate competence with current educational technology; possesses facility with electronic communication and learning management systems.
Participate actively in the Middle School community, including division and all-school meetings, assigned non-instructional duties, overnight field trips, day trips, and our advisory program.
Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree
Fluent Spanish skills and a deep understanding of language instruction
Respect for and commitment to the development of adolescent learners
Strong teaching and curriculum development experience
Excellent references
Strong verbal and written communication skills
The desire and ability to work collaboratively with parents and colleagues
Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
Evidence of commitment to Montessori Peace and Justice principles, including best practices for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion
