The Middle School Physical Education teacher will deliver instruction to students in various strands of Physical Education, serve as a student advisor for a group of students, and assume other duties as assigned by the Dean of the Middle School. The position is Full Time (10 month) Exempt.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: 

Instructional

• Plan, organize, and provide instruction in all strands of Physical Education.
• Employ a variety of teaching methods to engage different learning styles and ability levels in the classroom.
• Prepare motivating and stimulating lessons that reflect knowledge of the curriculum, child development, and student abilities.
• Encourage an inclusive environment that accepts different perspectives andbackgrounds of the students and elicits a greater understanding of the world around them with a global perspective. 
• Utilize a variety of assessments and use data to develop lessons and instructional activities as needed.
• Participate in faculty and professional meetings.
• Keep teacher qualification and/or certification current.
• Seek opportunities for ongoing professional learning.
• Adhere to MVA’s standards for faculty members regarding teaching, service, and scholarship as outlined in the Faculty and MVA Employee Handbooks.

Teaching and Learning Environment

• Create a learning environment that is motivating and age-appropriate.
• Set clear expectations for classwork and homework.
• Maintain current textbooks and other instructional resources that support student learning.
• Actively seek to understand students’ strengths and weaknesses.
• Maintain complete and accurate records of student attendance and progress.
• Respond promptly and with care to parent concerns, and communicate effectively with students, parents, colleagues, and administrators.
• Demonstrate strong classroom management skills.

Education and Experience:

• Bachelor’s degree required. Prior teaching experience, a Master’s degree, and the ability to contribute meaningfully to extracurricular programming are preferred.
• Candidates must have excellent writing, interpersonal, and organizational skills.

Physical requirements: 

• While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel and talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to reach with hands and arms. The employee is frequently required to stand; walk; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. 
• The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. 
• Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
• Must be able to access and navigate each department at the Academy’s facilities.
