Summary
Under direct supervision from the Outdoor Education Coordinator, the Outdoor Education Lead will support the mission, goals, and learning outcomes of the Riverstone Outdoor Education program. The Outdoor Education Lead will plan and execute an outdoor education curriculum for our Elementary School Students (Preschool-Grade 5) that directly relates to what students are learning in the classroom. The Lead will also co-teach a Middle School Outdoor Education Elective. Additionally, aid in preparing and executing outdoor experiences ranging from remote day trips to multi-day excursions. The Lead will be responsible for completing tasks and responsibilities outlined by the Outdoor Education Coordinator.
Responsibilities and Duties
Develop, refine, and build a robust outdoor education program for the Elementary School
Work with the Elementary School Director and PYP Coordinator to increase the number of curriculum-based outdoor education opportunities
Co-teach Middle School Outdoor Education Elective (Grade 6 - 8)
Acting teaching assistant for the Outdoor Leadership and Education Choice Course (Grade 9 - 10)
Execute logistics and planning of multi-day trips, including preparing and cleaning outdoor gear, food shopping and packing, cooking, route planning, rental car pick up, and other duties as assigned.
Spend approximately 30 - 40 days in the field, including at least 15 overnight/extended excursions
Educate students on appropriate backcountry travel skills and techniques, Leave No Trace, and environmental stewardship.
Utilize good decision-making skills and risk-management techniques while traveling in remote locations, responding appropriately to medical incidents.
Ensure the safety of students while participating in outdoor education activities
Maintain student behavior and manage group dynamicswhile being a positive role model in the outdoors
Participate in additional professional development opportunities surrounding the betterment of the Outdoor Education program
Assist in planning and executing Outdoor Education Training for staff and faculty
Drive a 12-15 passenger van safely to and from trailhead locations
Skills and Experience
Preferred candidates will have the following skills and experience:
Bachelor's Degree in Recreation, Outdoor Education, Environmental Science, or similar
Previous experience leading outdoor education outings and/or overnight trips
Demonstrated outdoor skills including, but not limited to, backcountry travel, safety and risk management, wilderness medicine.
Demonstrated experience in leading young children (ages 3 - 12) on outdoor or environmental education excursions
Medical Training: Wilderness First Responder with CPR, or required within 30 days of hiring
Specialized skills and training preferred such as backpacking, hiking, rock climbing, cycling, canoeing, kayaking, winter sports
Leave No Trace training preferred
Physical Capabilities
Lift and carry up to 50 lb pack while traveling over uneven terrain up to 10 miles a day
Comfortable sleeping on uneven ground with a sleeping pad in a tent
Able to perform in adverse weather such as rain, snow, and cold or hot temperatures
