The Packer Collegiate Institute, a historic and top-ranked independent school in the heart of Brooklyn, seeks a visionary, high-impact educational leader to serve as the Upper School Division Head (Grades 9-12). This pivotal role demands proven expertise in both strategic leadership and student-centered pedagogy. The ideal candidate is passionate about cultivating an innovative, academically rigorous, and deeply supportive educational program. They will lead the division on a highly visible platform, setting the standard for educational excellence, modeling cultural competence, nurturing students’ social-emotional growth, and addressing and resolving complex challenges in partnership with families.
The Upper School Division Head reports directly to the Head of School and is a key member of the Operational Leadership Team, collaborating to drive the school's mission, vision, and values forward in a dynamic independent school environment.
Core responsibilities include:
Lead Upper School Operations
Serve as the administrative leader of the division, responsible for all day-to-day operations
Directly lead and mentor a seven-person Upper School administrative team, setting roles and responsibilities to ensure clear operational and administrative efficiency
Oversee and ensure the effective operation of the College Counseling Office
Collaborate with Admissions on the Upper School application process
Collaborate with Communications on communications with all Upper School stakeholders
Provide guidance and oversight for the Registrar in the creation and implementation of the Upper School schedule to ensure it best meets the needs of students and faculty
Develop and monitor the divisional budget to maximize the use of available resources to enhance learning
Serve as the primary, decisive responder for significant incidents, crises, and/or complex student/family issues that may arise within the Upper School
Serve as Instructional Leader
Work with the Associate Head of School/Academic Dean, Head of Equity and Inclusion, other Division Heads, and Department Heads to ensure excellent teaching and learning
Oversee, regularly evaluate, and support the instructional program, co-curricular activities, and the daily work of all divisional faculty and staff
Coordinate with the Head of Health and Student Services and other school leaders to ensure that the educational, physical, social, and psychological needs of all students are appropriately monitored and met
Supervise teaching across all disciplines, working with academic leaders to support the professional growth, evaluation, and development of all divisional faculty
In partnership with Department Heads, the Associate Head and Head of School, manage the hiring, retention, and assignment of all Upper School faculty and staff
Lead the division's commitment to equity and inclusion by fostering a community in which all members are valued, modeling cultural competence, and ensuring an effective and respectful communication environment
Foster Meaningful, Supportive Relationships to Promote Learning
Maintain a highly visible presence in the daily student life of the school, regularly visiting classrooms and attending both Upper School and community-wide events
Develop strong collegial relationships with faculty and staff, with an eye toward support and growth in service of student learning
Develop trusting, supportive relationships with the parent body, establishing regular, open lines of communication and ongoing partnership
Oversee and ensure the fair implementation of student conduct guidelines, utilizing Packer's restorative practices framework
Cultivate a robust learning community where all members are encouraged to think deeply, listen actively, and collaborate
Demonstrate Schoolwide Leadership
Actively contribute to strategic school-wide improvement initiatives, including developing goals, implementing change, and refining practice
Serves as a key member of the Operational Leadership Team, collaborating with administrative colleagues to ensure educational excellence school-wide.
