Hackley School seeks a Middle School Teacher of English for the 2026-2027 school year. The preferred applicant will have experience facilitating Harkness-style discussions and fostering analytical skills through close reading. They will be comfortable guiding students through a range of written assignments, from reflective journals to multi-stage essays, emphasizing process and growth. They will also contribute to a collaborative department culture and actively participate in the life of the school.
Candidates should understand and promote the academic, social, and emotional growth of middle school students (particularly around matters of diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice); be willing to work collaboratively with peers both in English and other departments; be willing to serve as an advisor to Middle School students; and be interested in contributing to the extracurricular life of the Middle School.
Reporting Structure
This position reports to the English Department Chair and the Director of Middle School.
Specific Responsibilities
Plan and teach at least three sections of Middle School English, with the possibility of also teaching a section of English in the Upper School.
Work alongside grade-level teams to implement lessons that incorporate a variety of texts, genres, and perspectives with a focus on Harkness pedagogy, close reading, and critical analysis.
Serve as an academic advisor for Middle School students
Contribute to the broader life of the Middle School through extracurricular activities, clubs, or other initiatives.
The ideal candidate will:
Possess a Bachelor’s degree in English (Master’s degree preferred).
Have experience teaching Middle School English with a focus on discussion-based pedagogy, close reading, and literary analysis.
Possess a passion for working with students in the middle grades.
Salary and Benefits:
The salary range for this 10-month faculty position is $76,226–$116,239, with experience informing a base salary as published in Hackley’s faculty salary stage scale.
