Position Overview
The Math Specialist supports high-quality mathematics instruction across grades K–5 by working directly with students, coaching teachers, and strengthening schoolwide math practices. This role balances direct intervention for students who require intensive (Tier 3) math support with instructional coaching designed to improve Tier 1 and Tier 2 classroom instruction. The Math Specialist collaborates closely with teachers, learning specialists, and school leadership to ensure all students experience rigorous, responsive, and developmentally appropriate math instruction.
Key Responsibilities
Student Support (Tier 3)
Provide targeted, intensive math intervention for students requiring Tier 3 support.
Use assessment data to identify student needs, design intervention plans, and monitor progress over time.
Collaborate with classroom teachers, learning specialists, and families to align interventions with classroom instruction.
Maintain clear documentation of student goals, strategies, and progress.
Instructional Coaching (Tier 1 & Tier 2)
Partner with classroom teachers to strengthen Tier 1 core math instruction and Tier 2 small-group support.
Model effective math instructional practices, including differentiation, use of manipulatives, and conceptual understanding.
Observe classroom instruction and provide actionable, strengths-based feedback.
Support teachers in planning lessons that address a wide range of learners and learning profiles.
Facilitate data-informed conversations around student progress and instructional decision-making
Curriculum & Program Development
Support the alignment and coherence of the K–8 math curriculum.
Help ensure instructional practices reflect research-based math pedagogy.
Collaborate on schoolwide initiatives related to math instruction and student support.
Collaboration & Professional Learning
Work closely with learning specialists, division heads, and administrators to support student success.
Contribute or create professional development related to math instruction, intervention, and differentiation.
Serve as a thought partner for teachers around inclusive and equitable math practices.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree in mathematics education, special education, or a related field preferred.
Experience teaching mathematics in grades K–5, preferably with Eureka².
Demonstrated experience supporting Tier 3 learners with math difficulties.
Multisensory math curriculum experience
Experience in instructional coaching, mentoring, or professional learning facilitation.
Strong understanding of Tier 1, Tier 2, and Tier 3 instructional frameworks (e.g., MTSS).
Knowledge of best practices in math intervention and differentiation.
Excellent communication, collaboration, and organizational skills.
