Overview
The Kew-Forest School, a PS-12 co-educational day school founded in 1918 in Forest Hills, NY, seeks an experienced Learning Specialist to work with students and manage staff. The part-time Learning Specialist assists in overseeing academic interventions and ensuring equitable access to learning for all students in grades PS-12. This role reports directly to the Director of Learning Support, and collaborates with Division Heads, faculty, and families to design, implement, and monitor support structures aligned with best practices in inclusive education.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Child Study / Response to Intervention (RTI)
Support teachers across Lower/Middle and Upper school in designing/delivering Tier 1-3 interventions; analyze data to refine strategies.
Provide direct instruction (1:1 and small-group) for Tier 3 students and those with learning differences.
Maintain systems for tracking intervention effectiveness and student progress, including formal/informal assessments.
Foster student agency through goal-setting, self-assessment, and study/organizational strategies.
Teach one section of a 6th grade study skills course.
Teacher Support & Collaboration
Collaborate with teachers on instructional strategies (including differentiation, scaffolding, and inclusive practices) to support accommodations, modifications, and Approaches to Learning (ATL) skill integration.
Proactively address challenges by providing resources, modeling, or co-planning support.
Professional Development
Engage in continuous professional growth (conferences, peer networks) to stay current with best practices and share insights with staff.
Additional Responsibilities
Attend school events and meetings as required.
Fulfill other duties as assigned by the Director of Learning Support.
QUALIFICATIONS & ABILITIES
Expertise in RTI, IEP/504 processes, and inclusive pedagogy.
Strong organizational, communication, and data-analysis skills.
Ability to maintain professionalism and confidentiality.
Familiarity with IB PYP and MYP frameworks (preferred).
Salary Range
$30,000 - $55,000 per annum, commensurate with years of experience.
