This is a stipend, exempt position within the athletics department reporting to the Director of Athletics to begin for the 2026-27 school year.
Position Purpose:The Shipley School seeks a qualified candidate for the position of Director of Tennis.
Position Description: The will serve as the head of the entire tennis (girls and boys) program under the general direction of the Director of Athletics. In this role, the incumbent is responsible for the oversight and involvement in all parts of the girls and boys tennis programs for grades 6-12, and will coach the Upper School Varsity team.
Major Responsibilities:
Reporting to the Director of Athletics, provides a premier tennis program for the Shipley community, with opportunities to extend to those outside of Shipley.
Follows and upholds policies and mission statement of The Shipley School
Demonstrate good sportsmanship and maintain appropriate conduct towards the student-athletes, opposing team, officials, spectators, etc.
Build and develop strong relationships with Shipley students, families, community and alumni.
Physical Education
Working closely with Lower School Physical Education to develop Lower School tennis curriculum
Interscholastic
Serves as the Head of the entire Tennis program. Oversees all parts of the organization for grades 6-12, and coaches at the varsity level
Oversee Equipment and uniform inventory
Monitor practices
Develop lesson plans
Oversee skill development
Coaching in the Upper and Middle School
Fall (Girls) - Head Varsity Coach or Varsity Assistant/JV Coach w Middle School Coaching responsibilities
Winter - plan/oversee off season workouts/training/camps clinics
Spring (Boys) - Head Varsity Coach or Varsity Assistant/JV Coach w Middle School Coaching responsibilities
Responsible for scheduling all non league matches, and working with the Athletics
Travel to and from off-site locations with student-athletes including planning a spring break trip which have consistently been out of state for multiple evenings
Instruct and demonstrate skill sets and techniques necessary for development and athletic achievement in the sport of tennis
Ensure a positive environment free of hazing, harassment, bullying and intimidating language and behaviors - aligned with our Community Commitment
Responsible for the organization of all sports trips, including postseason, ensuring school guidelines are adhered to
Engage with faculty, alumni and the broader community to offer opportunities to play
Recruit student athletes of all ages for application to Shipley
Assists Athletic department in recruiting and hiring and evaluating coaches within the program
Record Keeping
Maintain accurate statistics, records, and results of the season.
Submit to the Athletics office at the conclusion of the season
Tennis Year round and program crossover opportunities- explore and implement possible:

Lessons
Summer Camp - deliver summer camp programming
Continue to grow and build the relationship with USTA
Update and manage a consistent message via social media
Partner with team captains to deliver social media messaging
Organize and liaise with the business office, AD and coaches for monthly billing cycles.
