Located at the foot of the Wasatch Mountains, Waterford School, with an enrollment of 1,100 is Utah’s premier liberal arts, college preparatory independent school for students in Preschool through High School. The school seeks a candidate who is thoroughly prepared to teach both term- and year-long Computer Science courses full-time at the Middle and Upper School levels (grades 6-12) and serve as a mentor/advisor to an advisory group. There is potential to develop interdisciplinary courses or participate in the school’s robotics program, which is robust and benefits from mentors who have strong coding backgrounds. Like many schools, Waterford is wrestling with the questions that are emerging in light of AI’s growing impact on access to information and other rapid technology changes; the school is looking for a candidate who is willing to think big, be visionary, and to explore what a computer science program could look like in the AI era.
The ideal candidate will have an advanced degree in Computer Science or an adjacent field, two or more years of classroom teaching experience, and will be able to develop a healthy rapport with Middle and Upper School students, work collaboratively with colleagues in the department, and embrace Waterford School’s mission, vision, and values in curriculum, teaching, and membership in the community. A full-time course load entails full teaching responsibility for up to five courses, each meeting for seventy-five minutes, two or three times a week.
Competencies and Skills Desired
Fluency in Python required; fluency in Java desired
Experience with coding machine learning algorithm
Experience teaching AP Computer Science A (Java)
Experience with competition coding, robotics, game development, and/or tools in the software/hardware intersection (Arduino, Microbits, Makerspace, etc)
Experience with competition robotics programs (especially FIRST) and interest in being a part of growing robotics program
Masterful teaching that demonstrates an understanding of best practices in pedagogy
Exceptional skills in building strong relationships with students and their families
Strong collaborative skills and experience working collaboratively with a teaching team
Highly developed organizational skills
