Calvert School, an independent lower and middle school, is searching for a full-time History Teacher for its Middle School for the 2024-25 school year. In addition, Calvert is seeking a Middle School Grade Level Dean. Calvert School is dedicated to educating girls and boys through its time-tested method of teaching and its rigorous curriculum. Particular emphasis is given to mastering essential skills, inspiring a lifelong love of learning, and instilling enthusiasm, responsibility and self-discipline. Calvert School is located in Tuscany-Canterbury, a residential neighborhood in Baltimore City, just north of Johns Hopkins University and south of Loyola University Maryland, accessible from Charles Street and I-83.
We are seeking qualified candidates who will be responsible for teaching Sixth and Seventh Grade History. Sixth Grade History is an ancient civilizations course. Major topics in Seventh Grade History will include themes in American History from the colonial period through the civil war. Through reading and writing assignments, students gain knowledge and understanding of salient political, historical, and current events. Special emphasis is placed on making connections between historical events and relevant modern-day topics, such as political parties, regional economies, and the rule of law. Students actively engage with each other to analyze material and gain a deeper understanding of historical events and their influence on modern-day America.
We are also seeking a candidate to serve as Grade Level Dean. The Dean will work with our advisory program which is dedicated to helping students best understand who they are and where they fit. They will also provide support to teachers, helping them create a warm, structured, consistent, developmentally appropriate and responsive classroom culture rooted in meaningful relationships. Qualified history teachers who have interest and prior experience working with middle school aged students in these areas would be a plus.
Teachers at Calvert are also responsible for managing the daily affairs of a classroom including parent communications, teacher collaborations, and other school-based duties and responsibilities. Teachers are expected to contribute to the Calvert community as coaches, club advisors, field trip chaperones, and serve on school committees on occasion.
The ideal candidate will have a Bachelor’s and a background teaching history. Prior experience teaching middle school aged students is strongly preferred. Candidates must be able to demonstrate an ability to inspire and support students and must have excellent writing, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
Calvert School offers a competitive salary and benefits package including medical, prescription, dental, vision, life, disability, and retirement plans. A State of Maryland and FBI background check will be performed.
