Position Overview:
Under the supervision of the Assistant Head for Teaching & Learning – Lower School, the Science Teacher will plan, develop, and implement an effective science curriculum to
maintain a classroom environment that supports each student’s social, emotional, and
cognitive growth and development in accordance with the policies and philosophy of
The Lamplighter School. The Science Teacher must also be a passionate educator with
comprehensive knowledge of early childhood development who employs a variety of
teaching tools and methodologies to educate students in first - fourth grades in a robust science and design learning program.
- Job Responsibilities:
Plan, develop, and implement an engaging curriculum based on Next Generation
Science Standards - Follow the Lamplighter mission to include joyful, hands-on activities while
including elements of exploration and experimentation guided by the
constructivist philosophy of science - Where appropriate, incorporate elements of STEM to supplement the science
curriculum and provide a holistic experience and knowledge for the students - Revise and modify curriculum accordingly throughout the year, as necessary to
meet the needs of all students - Collaborate with both the Science Department and Homeroom Teachers on
large-scale projects that develop 21st century skills such as adaptation,
collaboration, communication, creativity, and innovation - Pursue new opportunities for local area partnerships to support science-specific
projects and promote The Lamplighter School’s science program within the
Dallas community - Cultivate effective professional relationships with students, parents, colleagues,
and The Lamplighter School’s partnerships with the Perot Museum, the Dallas
Arboretum, Trinity River Audubon Center, and Mountain View College - Seek opportunities to lead, publish, and present on Science topics in the
community, at national conferences, and beyond, both virtually, and in-person - Create positive educational climate for students
Perform all other related duties as assigned
Education and Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in Science Education; Master’s degree preferred
- 3 years teaching experience preferred
- Strong emphasis on elementary level science and teaching scientific principles
- Experience managing small teams of volunteers and working on a team
- Experience with or willingness to explore sustainability, robotics, hydroponics,
and animal life cycle related projects - Experience in designing curriculum using the most current science standards
Job Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Demonstrate thorough knowledge of teaching practices and a commitment to
teaching within a caring, highly academic environment - Knowledge of current trends and research in early childhood learning
- Ability to differentiate curriculum for students with varying learning styles
- Strong organizational skills
- Strong classroom management skills
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, and a willingness to present
when needed - Willingness to develop new projects, special events, programs, and partnerships
to enhance and enrich the science program-including evening science events on
campus and off-campus field trips - Willingness to work in a collaborative, fast-paced, team environment
- Familiar with current effective/research-based technological pedagogical
knowledge and practices
