Position Summary
Detroit Country Day Middle School seeks a dynamic and engaging Strings Teacher to lead an after-school program for 4th and 5th grade students. The ideal candidate will help students grow in their musical skills and develop a love for music. The Strings Teacher will create and teach a music curriculum that builds basic skills, encourages creativity, and promotes teamwork in groups. The Teacher will create a welcoming and supportive environment for all students. Key responsibilities include teaching group string classes, preparing students for performances, working with other music teachers, and communicating with families. This is a part-time, non-exempt position that runs Monday through Friday from 3:00 pm to 4:30 pm during the school year.
Essential Responsibilities
Plan and deliver engaging, student-centered lessons aligned with state standards for music education.
Teach instrumental music with an emphasis on music reading, expression, and quality tone development.
Use a variety of instructional strategies, including demonstrations, recordings, technology, and authentic resources
Design and administer formative and summative assessments to evaluate student progress.
Provide timely and constructive feedback to students that enhances their understanding of music.
Maintain accurate records of student performance and communicate progress to parents and administration to foster collaboration and support
Ability to create a positive, structured, and engaging classroom environment.
Effective classroom management strategies tailored to upper-elementary learners.
Consistent and age-appropriate discipline practices that promote respect and responsibility
Work collaboratively with colleagues and the department chair to develop musicianship, fill instrumental needs, and align curriculum.
Participate in departmental meetings.
Support extracurricular activities, such as concerts or cultural events, as needed.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Music, Music Education or related field required
State teaching certification preferred
3+ years of teaching experience preferred
Skills & Competencies
Strong knowledge of instrumental pedagogy for beginning/intermediate strings students (cello, viola, and violin).
Ability to teach fundamental technique, music literacy, and ensemble skills in a developmentally appropriate way.
Skill in arranging and selecting repertoire suitable for young musicians.
Conducting ability appropriate for elementary-level ensembles.
Proficient in multiple string instruments to demonstrate and assist students individually.
Comfort with conducting and directing student performances
Technological Proficiency
Comfortable using music education technology (e.g., MakeMusic Cloud, Noteflight, Flipgrid, etc.).
Basic knowledge of sound reinforcement and recording tools for student performances.
Familiarity with learning management systems and digital communication tools (e.g., Canvas, Seesaw)

Detroit Country Day School’s facilities are situated in two locations approximately three miles apart and less than one half hour from the center of Detroit. The Upper School (9-12) and Middle School (4-8) share adjoining campuses in Beverly Hills, where the administrative offices, facility services, safety and security services, and the main arts and athletics facilities are located. The Detroit Country Day Upper School offers a strong and varied program that provides numerous opportunities for students to demonstrate their individual strengths and develop their potential. The rigorous college-preparatory program, which includes Honors and Advanced Placement courses in each discipline in addition to a diverse selection of electives, prepares students for college and beyond. In addition to a series of honors and Advanced Placement courses, students at Detroit Country Day Upper School may pursue an International Baccalaureate Diploma.
