Poughkeepsie Day School (PDS) is a progressive, coeducational, PreK–Grade 12 school. PDS is an International Baccalaureate candidate school for, both, the Primary Years Programme (PYP) and the Middle Years Programme (MYP) PDS seeks a dynamic, experienced lower school teacher. The individual will work collaboratively with other team members for planning within the PYP framework and assess using both formative and summative reporting. The school values an inquiry-based, constructivist approach to instruction; responsiveness to student exploration; and the role of teacher as a guide to student learning. Teachers are expected to design engaging, developmentally appropriate learning experiences for children. Candidates should have a deep understanding of progressive pedagogical practices, social and emotional learning (SEL), and be committed to a curriculum that promotes social justice. The role requires strong written and interpersonal communication skills.
Responsibilities include:
Plan and implement a developmentally appropriate, differentiated curriculum built on social, emotional, and academic goals using the International Baccalaureate PYP framework
Plan lessons and tailor instruction to meet students’ individual needs in a small class, mixed age setting
Maintain records on all students, including attendance, portfolios, and assessment information
Write detailed progress reports two times per school year
Collaborate closely with specialist subject teachers about student progress
Coordinate with the school faculty, families, and outside support specialists to best support student growth
Communicate student progress and goals through family conferences, student reports, parent meetings, phone calls, and emails
Attend school events, including admissions information sessions and community-building events
Connect with local organizations to build partnerships and extend learning beyond campus
Keep up to date with educational research and literature
Ideal candidates should possess:
International-mindedness and multicultural awareness
A Bachelor’s degree (Master’s preferred) and a minimum of two years teaching experience
Ability to teach a range of learning styles, comfort with differentiated instruction
Ability to collaborate and build rapport with children, parents, and colleagues
Experience in inquiry-based learning and teaching methodologies; experience and/or knowledge of the IB Primary Years Programme a plus
Knowledge of a variety of classroom management techniques (ex. Responsive Classroom)
Experience with project-based learning and student exhibition
Ability to successfully engage students with the goal of fostering their cognitive and social and emotional growth
Organizational, writing, and interpersonal skills
Passion for working with children and the craft of teaching
Ability to exercise professional judgment at all times
