Position Summary Detroit Country Day School seeks a dynamic and enthusiastic General Music Teacher for 4th and 5th-grade students. This is a required course that meets every other day for 45 minutes and includes preparing and leading student concerts throughout the year. The ideal candidate has a passion for music education, a strong understanding of upper elementary and young middle school learners, and experience fostering creativity through singing, playing, and moving. Experience with singing and instrument pedagogy is strongly preferred, including usage of methodologies such as Kodály, Orff, Alexander Technique, and/or world drumming. This is a full-time faculty position that reports to the Middle School Director.
Essential Responsibilities
Create a supportive and engaging learning environment that fosters musical exploration and skill development
Plan and guide musical performances for 4th and 5th grade, including Winter Concerts, grade-level performances, and school events in collaboration with the 4/5 Team and the Performing Arts Team
Use developmentally appropriate methods to teach musical concepts, including basic to intermediate music theory, to promote proficient music literacy
Incorporate a variety of instruments (such as recorders and percussion) to support hands-on learning
Design lessons that develop students' appreciation of diverse musical genres and cultures
Build students' social-emotional learning and confidence through a Mind-Brain Education and Social Emotional Learning lens with daily experiential opportunities
Maintain clear and consistent communication with families regarding curriculum, student progress, and performance schedules
Utilize Canvas to support instruction, assessment, and parent engagement
Collaborate with colleagues, administrators, and families to support student success
Promote an inclusive and respectful classroom community where all students feel a sense of belonging
Comply with all school health and safety protocols
Athletic coaching and/or extracurricular activities are encouraged
Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Music Education or related field; Master's degree preferred
Proficient piano and/or guitar skills strongly preferred
Experience teaching upper elementary and/or early middle school students in a general music setting
Strong organizational, communication, and classroom management skills
Enthusiasm for collaboration and community involvement
Preference to candidates with coaching experience or expressed willingness to coach

Detroit Country Day School’s facilities are situated in two locations approximately three miles apart and less than one half hour from the center of Detroit. The Detroit Country Day Upper School offers a strong and varied program that provides numerous opportunities for students to demonstrate their individual strengths and develop their potential. The rigorous college-preparatory program, which includes Honors and Advanced Placement courses in each discipline in addition to a diverse selection of electives, prepares students for college and beyond. In addition to a series of honors and Advanced Placement courses, students at Detroit Country Day Upper School may pursue an International Baccalaureate Diploma.
