Charles Armstrong School is the premier school for children with dyslexia and related learning differences in the San Francisco Bay Area with a national reputation for excellence. We are a non-profit, independent, coeducational day school serving approximately 240 students in grades 1-8.
Position Overview
The Lower School Homeroom Teacher plays a central role in Armstrong's collaborative, co-teaching model for students in grades 1–5. Homeroom teachers create and facilitate daily morning meetings, teach small group language and math classes, and co-teach content areas including writing and social studies. Through differentiated, evidence-based instruction, the Homeroom Teacher maximizes student strengths and promotes academic success in accordance with Armstrong's structured literacy methodology and mission. This role requires effective communication, flexibility, and a commitment to teaching students with dyslexia and related learning differences.
Roles and Responsibilities Instructional Leadership
- Provide direct, differentiated instruction in small group language and math classes
- Create and facilitate daily morning meetings using Responsive Classroom approach
- Co-teach writing and social studies
- Identify, select, modify, and create instructional resources in collaboration with grade-level teammates and instructional coaches
- Implement evidence-based structured literacy approaches
Family Partnership & Communication
- Conduct three parent-teacher conferences annually (fall intake, mid-year, and end-of-year)
- Prepare comprehensive data-driven report cards each trimester
- Communicate regularly with families to support student success and build strong home-school connections
Collaboration & Professional Practice
- Work closely with grade-level teaching team, instructional coaches, division directors, and specialists
- Participate in weekly planning meetings and professional learning communities
- Engage in ongoing professional development, including Wilson Reading System training
- Contribute to school-wide initiatives and community-building events
Student Support & Classroom Management
- Use Responsive Classroom approach to create positive, inclusive classroom community
- Support students' social-emotional development and self-advocacy skills
- Implement individualized accommodations and interventions
- Maintain trauma-informed, strengths-based approach to student learning and behavior
Education, Certifications, and Work Related Experience:
Required
- Bachelor’s Degree
- Enthusiasm, creativity, and commitment to teaching children with learning differences
- Strong communication, organizational, and collaborative skills
Preferred
- Valid teaching credential
- Two years or more of classroom teaching experience
- Commitment to evidence-based structured literacy instruction
Note: Training in our Structured Literacy and Math programs will be provided.
