Position Summary
The Beginning School and Lower School seek a collaborative and student-centered educator and leader to contribute to a high-functioning support student team that serves students in grades 3PreK - 5. In collaboration with division heads in the beginning and lower schools, this individual provides leadership, strategic vision, and oversight to the work of the student support team. The Director is also a leading contributor to divisional work in curriculum review and implementation, schedule design and maintenance, assessments and grading systems, and professional development in the divisions, all with an emphasis on ensuring we are meeting the needs of all students. The ideal candidate will be organized, flexible, knowledgeable, highly collaborative, and an exemplary communicator. They will bring warmth, good cheer, and a deep commitment to support of children and their families.
Primary Job Responsibilities
In collaboration with Division Heads, provide mission and vision for Learning Specialist push-in support as well as for co-teaching and shared planning between faculty and Learning Specialists
Oversee and advise on small group academic support in the Beginning and Lower Schools, personally implementing groups when needed
Supervise a team of at least two full-time Learning Specialists, in collaboration with Division Heads
Serve as an additional Learning Specialist for one or two grade levels, depending on team structure and grade level needs
Supervise the creation and use of Student Support Plans across Beginning and Lower Schools
Manage resources for faculty, parents, and students concerning learning profiles and needs, including supporting referrals for outside evaluations/support
Cultivate, maintain, and supervise partnerships with outside specialists and on-campus independent contractors (OTs, SLPs, tutors, evaluators, etc.)
Assist with the selection, alignment, and implementation of curricula across the Beginning and Lower Schools from the perspective of developmentally-appropriate practices and supporting all learners
Guide and support implementation of student assessments and divisional data analysis across Beginning and Lower Schools
Contribute to and create professional development opportunities which are focused on supporting all learners and evidence-based effective instructional practices for faculty and staff in the Beginning and Lower Schools
Consult with Admissions Committees and on Admissions processes, as needed
Collaborate with USBE/Carson Smith Scholarship Foundation to qualify families for special education funding through a process guided by the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA)
Special Projects, as identified in collaboration with Division Heads, such as:
Creating smooth transitions between divisions (K to 1st and 5th to 6th)
Creation and maintenance of divisional schedules
Divisional structures & systems
Benchmarks and grading
Skills and Requirements
Certification and/or graduate degree and/or equivalent school experience in special education/learning disabilities, or related field
Successful leadership experience, preferably in student support or an educational setting
Successful experience supporting teachers in understanding & supporting a range of student learners
Successful experience teaching and/or supporting students aged 3 - 11
Strong positive behavior management and collaborative problem-solving skills
Demonstrated capacities for collaboration, self-reflection, cultural competence, flexibility, and curiosity
Exceptional organizational, verbal, and written communication skills
Facility with Google Suite iOS
