Newton Country Day School of the Sacred Heart is seeking a passionate and dedicated Middle School Grade 5 Teacher to join our faculty. The ideal candidate will inspire a love for literature, writing, problem solving and critical thinking in students while developing their communication skills. This position requires a versatile educator who is capable of teaching in a highly relational learning environment.
Position Overview
The Grade 5 Lead Teacher serves as the primary academic and pastoral leader for Grade 5 students. This educator is responsible for teaching English (including literature and writing), grammar, history, and religion while creating a joyful, rigorous, and developmentally responsive classroom culture.
In addition, the Grade 5 Lead Teacher oversees the Grade 5 Voyagers Experiential Education Program, coordinating cross-curricular, hands-on learning experiences that take place off campus one afternoon every two weeks. The role also includes leadership within the Grade 5 team, facilitating collaboration and communication around student progress and program implementation.
Primary Responsibilities
Teaching & Curriculum
Teach English (literature, writing, vocabulary, grammar), history and religion to Grade 5 students.
Design engaging, differentiated lesson plans aligned with school standards and curricular goals.
Integrate reading, writing, critical thinking, and problem-solving across disciplines.
Use varied assessment strategies to monitor and support student growth.
Provide timely, constructive feedback to students and families.
Create a classroom environment that supports academic excellence, curiosity, and respect.
Experiential Education Leadership
Coordinate and implement the Grade 5 Voyagers Experiential Education Program
Plan and supervise off-campus learning experiences (half to full day excursions, every two weeks).
Collaborate with community partners and coordinate logistics of excursions.
Develop cross-curricular projects that connect experiential learning across the humanities.
Assess and reflect on program effectiveness and student engagement.
Grade-Level Leadership & Collaboration
Serve as Grade 5 Lead, coordinating periodic team meetings with other Grade 5 teachers.
Facilitate discussions regarding student progress, academic support, and social-emotional development.
Support alignment of curriculum, assessment, and instructional practices within the Grade 5 team and Middle School.
Partner with learning specialists, counselors, and administrators as needed.
Communicate proactively with families regarding student progress and grade-level initiatives.
Collaborate with other Grade 5 subject teachers (math, science, visual and performing arts) to design cross-curricular projects and learning experiences.
Partner with colleagues to enrich learning experiences and contribute actively to a team-based culture of collegiality.
Attend occasional evening and weekend events; and other duties as assigned
Student Support & Community Engagement
Serve as an advisor and advocate for students.
Promote a positive, inclusive classroom and grade-level culture.
Participate in school-wide events, faculty meetings, and professional development.
Support the broader life of the school community.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree preferred in Education or a related field.
Demonstrated experience teaching upper elementary or middle school students.
Strong background in literacy instruction.
Experience with project-based or experiential learning preferred.
Excellent organizational, communication, and leadership skills.
Ability to manage logistics and lead off-campus excursions.
Commitment to collaboration and professional growth.
Alignment with the Sacred Heart educational mission to educate the whole child.
Physical & Work Environment Requirements
This role requires the ability to lift, carry, push, and pull materials and equipment.
It demands mobility for tasks such as reaching, holding, touching, pushing, and lifting.
The job typically involves 25% sitting, 25% walking, and 50% standing, performed in a generally hazard-free environment with minimal temperature variations.
Depending on the classroom assignment, the role may require relocating between classrooms throughout the day, including ascending and descending stairs.
Occasionally, extended hours are necessary, including after school, evenings, and weekends.
Newton Country Day's campus consists of multiple buildings, playing fields, and outdoor learning spaces, connected by external walkways and stairs. This position requires moving between these areas in all weather conditions.
Compensation
$63,000-131,000 based on experience
