Concord Academy, an independent, college-preparatory school for grades 9 through 12, located in Concord, Massachusetts, has a full-time teaching opening in its English Department for the 2026–27 academic year. The position entails teaching two sections of a year-long curricular course (9th- or 10th-grade English) and two semester-long sections of a literature seminar each term. We aim to appoint an experienced teacher to support our strong and well-established English program and invite candidates to review its offerings in the current Program Catalog.
Founded in 1922, Concord Academy has long balanced high academic standards with a focus on educating the whole student through a rich curriculum that includes the arts, athletics, and cultural opportunities. Self-expression, storytelling, critical thinking, and careful listening are hallmarks of the Concord Academy experience.
We actively seek applicants who reflect and support our mission-driven commitment to creating and sustaining a diverse and equitable school community. We invite candidates with a strong background in teaching English literature and demonstrated expertise in one or more of the following areas of specialization: African American, Asian American, Indigenous, Latinx, and queer literary studies. We welcome applicants who demonstrate genuine enthusiasm for working with adolescents and a clear commitment to inclusive pedagogy that aligns with our mission. Successful candidates will value and explore opportunities to collaborate with colleagues and engage with a vibrant community of learners. They will effectively integrate student and departmental feedback into their instructional practices and will design curricula innovatively and intentionally, with a steadfast commitment to their professional and personal growth as an educator. The ideal candidate will teach flexibly across multiple genres of literature (poetry, drama, fiction, nonfiction) and time periods (classical to contemporary literature), adapting instruction to meet differentiated learning needs. They will develop a wide range of thematically or period-focused English electives that juxtapose and bring an array of texts, media, theoretical perspectives, and interpretive lenses into conversation. Embracing a discussion-based approach to learning, they will encourage students to think critically, engage with challenging questions and readings, and develop an informed, analytical, and persuasive writing style. In their cover letter, applicants should address the priorities mentioned above. They should include examples drawn from literature they have recently taught, illustrating their teaching philosophy and classroom practice. Candidates with an M.A., M.A.T., or higher degree in English literature are encouraged to apply.
