Job Description: Berkeley Hall School is seeking a dynamic and visionary Director of Middle School & Curriculum to serve as both an instructional leader and divisional director for our sixth through eighth grade and specialist programs. This senior leadership role unites two critical functions: championing the day-to-day life of the Middle School while driving the school-wide development, implementation, and continuous improvement of academic programs across all K–8 grades. Reporting directly to the Head of School, this leader collaborates closely with faculty and the Administration Team to elevate every dimension of school life — from fostering a culture of student growth and accountability, to building meaningful partnerships with families, to shaping a curriculum that is rigorous, inclusive, and student-centered. The ideal candidate brings intellectual curiosity, strategic thinking, and a deep commitment to equity, belonging, and the Berkeley Hall mission.
This position includes but is not limited to the following duties:
Middle School Leadership & Operations:
Serve as the lead administrator of the Middle School, responsible for its day-to-day operations and culture.
Maintain alignment between the school's mission and all activities of the Middle School
Oversee all Middle School scheduling, including class schedules, duty schedules, and special event and student-support schedules.
Coordinate substitute teacher hiring, scheduling, and coverage needs.
Maintain and manage the annual Middle School and specialist programming budget, including purchasing approvals and reimbursements.
Oversee the development of Middle School elective programming, including facilitating teacher proposals and leading the end-of-trimester elective showcase.
Oversee the trimester report card process, ensuring clarity, accuracy, and professionalism.
Curriculum Development & Instructional Leadership
Design, review, and update K–8 curriculum across all subject areas to ensure coherence, progression, and relevance.
Support Middle School and specialist faculty in implementing, reviewing, and updating curriculum, scope and sequence, and instructional resources.
Integrate innovative, research-based pedagogical approaches into K-8 curriculum design and ensure horizontal and vertical alignment across grade levels.
Ensure K-8 curricula meet relevant state and national educational standards and stay current with emerging best practices.
Incorporate the BHS student-centered, inquiry-based instructional approach into all practices and supports culturally responsive curriculum planning.
Faculty Supervision, Coaching & Professional Development
Supervise Middle School and specialist teachers, leading formal observation cycles, documentation, evaluation, and end-of-year performance reviews.
Provide ongoing mentorship and onboarding support for new middle school and specialist faculty through frequent check-ins and coaching conversations.
Design and facilitate a comprehensive K-8 professional development program aligned with school goals, including workshops, learning communities, and action research.
Facilitates the whole school long-term planning and implementation of the Berkeley Hall Depth of Study program
Introduce teachers to new instructional strategies, educational technologies, and differentiation techniques and identify external professional development opportunities.
Assessment, Data & Continuous Improvement
Establish and oversee a comprehensive assessment system that measures student growth and achievement across K–8.
Analyze K-8 student performance data to identify trends and work with teachers to use data effectively in instructional planning and differentiation.
Lead a culture of reflection, innovation, and evidence-based decision-making to drive ongoing enhancement of teaching and learning.
Coordinate with consultants, external evaluators and accreditation bodies as needed.
Student Support, Wellness & School Culture
Support all Middle School student discipline and behavior response systems in collaboration with teachers, the Student Wellness Specialist, and school leadership.
Assess Middle School student academic and behavioral needs and work with appropriate teams to develop support plans and accommodations.
Facilitate the Middle School advisory programming, along with the Wellness Support Specialist and Middle School teachers
Ensure consistent communication and follow-through on student support plans and family partnerships.
Family Partnership & Community Engagement
Develop close relationships with Middle School families and actively seek resolution of concerns as they arise.
Plan and coordinate major Middle School community events, traditions, performances, celebrations, and parent programming.
Communicate curriculum initiatives and student progress to the broader school community.
Assist with admissions and retention initiatives through tours, events, and committee participation as requested.
School-Wide Leadership & Collaboration
Participate in strategic planning processes, leadership meetings, and DEIB work in alignment with Berkeley Hall's mission and values.
Leads and facilitates Academic Team Meetings and serves on key school-wide committees.
Collaborate with Admission, Advancement, Marketing, Communications, and HR teams to support school-wide initiatives.
Support culturally responsive teaching practices and contribute to school-wide belonging and inclusion initiatives.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Relevant teaching experience
Master's degree in Education, Curriculum and Instruction, Educational Leadership, or a related field (preferred)
Experience in independent school settings (preferred)
Familiarity with student-centered or inquiry-based educational approaches (preferred)
Knowledge of educational technology integration (preferred)
Familiarity with curricula in place at BHS: Fountas and Pinnell, Illustrative Math, Reading and Writing Workshop, Fundations (preferred)
Demonstrated expertise in curriculum design, assessment practices, and K–8 pedagogy
Experience supervising, coaching, and mentoring teachers
Proven ability to use data to inform instruction and drive improvement
Strong knowledge of child development and age-appropriate pedagogy for K–8 students
Commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging
Live Scan and TB clearance required
