The Browning School is a K-12 boys school located on 62nd Street in midtown Manhattan, New York. Founded by scholar and teacher John A. Browning, The Browning School has been a leader in fostering the intellectual and personal growth of boys and young men since 1888. Serving roughly 450 students in kindergarten through grade 12, Browning strives to combine the best of a traditional prep school environment and curriculum with imaginative teaching and a strong value system – all in a single-sex setting.
POSITION DESCRIPTION
Browning is searching for a part-time K-8 PE and Rock Climbing Teacher for the 2026-2027 academic year. The position will begin on or around August 27, 2026. The expected annual salary range for this position is $32,000-$38,000, commensurate with experience--an exact offer reflects a candidate’s relevant experience, skill level, and the responsibilities of the role.A bachelor’s degree or considerable experience in the role is required, while an advanced degree in a related field is preferred. Key Responsibilities
Physical Education Teachers are responsible for instructing students in physical fitness, sports, and other physical activities. They develop and implement lesson plans, assess student progress, and encourage participation in various activities. PE teachers also promote healthy lifestyles and help students develop important physical skills and social-emotional competencies. Developing a foundation of content knowledge is also an emphasis at Browning, while enriching the experience with activities that engage the mind of a Browning boy. All Browning teachers are responsible for building strong relationships with students and delivering the content and curriculum of the Browning program. Successful teachers believe in and desire the growth of all their students and have a passion for their subject matter and for the art, craft, and science of pedagogy. Ultimately, teachers are responsible for the most important work of our School -- knowing our boys and teaching them well.
The Part Time PE and Rock Climbing Teaching is tasked with:
Designing and teaching a rock climbing unit as a signature part of Browning’s Middle School PE program in Grades 6-8
Teach 3 periods of rock climbing classes and 5 additional periods of PE classes each week
Leading a weekly MS rock climbing club
Managing the Panther Den, a multi-purpose movement room that includes a traversing wall. Responsibilities include:
Supervising maintenance and inspection of the rock wall in collaboration with the Browning facilities team
Routesetting in support of the program
Provide rock wall training for other Browning faculty and staff
Supervising Middle School recess when it is held in the space
Developing and implementing an inspiring curriculum in conjunction with department members
Using Browning’s Target-Focused Teaching and studentship methods to ensure student growth and alignment
Creating strong relationships with students built on Browning’s core values of honesty, dignity, curiosity, and purpose
Collaborating as a professional, collegial, and inspirational member of the department
Participating in professional development to grow the self, department, and school
Implementing supervisory duties as assigned, such as lunch, recess, or study hall coverage
Setting a professional, collegial, and inspirational tone in the department
Participating in department meetings
Communicating with parents about curricular and coaching matters
Heartily contributing to the school community
