Jack M. Barrack Hebrew Academy (Barrack) is a pluralistic Jewish day school for students in grades 6-12. Located in Bryn Mawr, PA (metropolitan Philadelphia), Barrack is the premier Jewish day school in the Delaware Valley, attracting students from Philadelphia and its suburbs, Allentown, southern New Jersey, and Wilmington, Delaware. The school integrates a comprehensive and rigorous college preparatory curriculum with the teaching of essential Jewish and American values and texts. Guided by our four Derech Eretz values of Honor, Moral Courage, Kindness, and Community, Barrack values diversity, celebrates the richness of Judaism's language, culture, and history, and is strongly connected to Israel. Barrack prepares future leaders of the American, Jewish and global communities who work for a better world through acts of justice and compassion.
Barrack is seeking an experienced, dynamic, and caring educator to serve as a full-time Jewish Life Educator beginning August 1, 2026.
This position has two core responsibilities: teaching Jewish Studies courses and facilitating the Jewish Life Initiative (JLI). The Jewish Life Educator will work with and mentor JLI students (selected 11th and 12th grade students) to design and run Jewish holiday programming for grades 6-12 as well as develop their Jewish leadership competencies. JLI also takes a lead role in planning and running the three school Shabbatonim: 6th grade, 8th grade and a 9th-11th Upper School Shabbaton.
Interested candidates must be able to collaborate with colleagues, plan student-centered lessons, and foster a growth mindset among their students. As a community that brings together students of various Jewish backgrounds, the ideal candidate will be committed to developing programs that bring students together, while also developing opportunities for student's individual spiritual growth. This candidate will be an integral member of the larger school community and, as such, will work with all students and faculty and will regularly collaborate and partner with the Student Life and Activities Coordinator, an Israel Shaliach, the Jewish Studies Department Chair, and the Upper and Middle School Directors.
Ideal candidates should have a strong work ethic, be adaptable and flexible, and enjoy working with middle school and high school students and families. Jewish Studies faculty often teach Jewish studies (may include rabbinics, Jewish theology, ethics, life and culture, etc.) and/or Tanakh courses as well as lead a Shaharit group Monday-Thursday mornings. This role will have a reduced course load to plan programming and work with JLI students.
Qualifications include:
A bachelor’s degree with a strong background in educating middle and/or upper school students grades six through twelve. Master’s degree or rabbinic ordination candidates are preferred.
A collaborative spirit and an ability to function as a member of a team with administrators, teachers, students, and parents
Ability to meet deadlines in a timely manner
Ability to teach and read Jewish sources utilizing original Hebrew text
Interest in developing Jewish studies and Tanakh curricula in partnership with Jewish Studies faculty
Growth-oriented and seeks opportunities for professional development.
Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal skills with experience in effective communication with parents, students, teachers, and staff
Kindness, patience, and a healthy sense of humor
Proficiency in the use of classroom technology, including but not limited to: Google Suite, learning management systems, and email management
Salary is dependent on the highest degree obtained and the number of years of teaching experience. For consideration, please submit a resume and cover letter to Rabbi Rachmiel Gurwitz, Jewish Studies Department Chair, at rgurwitz@jbha.org.
