Browne Academy seeks an engaging, compassionate, and intellectually curious Middle School History Teacher to join our faculty for the 2026–2027 school year. This position includes teaching 7th and 8th grade History, leading the Capstone elective, and serving as an advisor.
The ideal candidate is a passionate educator who inspires students to explore history through inquiry, discussion, and critical analysis. This teacher will cultivate the ability to analyze primary and secondary sources, evaluate multiple perspectives, and make meaningful connections between historical events and the modern world. The candidate will be skilled at creating a classroom environment where students feel comfortable asking questions, engaging in thoughtful debate, and developing their own informed perspectives.
Browne seeks a collaborative teacher who values the developmental needs of middle school students and understands the importance of building strong relationships with adolescents. This teacher will work closely with colleagues and administrators to support Browne’s mission by promoting the school’s core values in each student's academic and personal experience. The ideal candidate will demonstrate a commitment to student-centered learning, differentiated instruction, and project-based learning that encourages curiosity, creativity, and intellectual risk-taking.

Program Highlights
Dynamic Middle School History Program emphasizing inquiry, discussion, and the analysis of primary and secondary sources.
Experiential learning opportunities in and around Washington, DC, including the use of museums, archives, monuments, and historic sites as extensions of the classroom.
Capstone elective program where students pursue interdisciplinary projects that emphasize research, collaboration, and presentation of real world issues.
Advisory program designed to support the social, emotional, and academic growth of middle school students.
Meaningful class travel experiences, including trips to Philadelphia, Gettysburg, and a week-long 8th grade class trip that builds independence, community, and leadership.
Teaching Responsibilities
Teach four sections of 7th and 8th Grade History, designing engaging units that emphasize historical inquiry, critical thinking, and the analysis of primary and secondary sources.
Teach one Capstone elective, guiding students through interdisciplinary projects that emphasize research, collaboration, and presentation of real world ideas.
Teach one additional elective course aligned with faculty expertise and middle school program needs.
Plan and lead field trips that extend classroom learning and connect students to local historical resources.
Serve as an 8th grade advisor, supporting students’ academic and social development and maintaining communication with families.
Attend and help supervise the 8th grade week-long class trip as part of the middle school program.
Design and implement lessons that engage diverse learners and encourage discussion, analysis, and reflection.
Assess student learning regularly using a variety of methods and communicate progress clearly with students, families, and administrators.
Create a classroom culture that promotes curiosity, respectful dialogue, and intellectual engagement.
Collaborate closely with middle school colleagues to support interdisciplinary learning and program development.
Participate fully in the life of the school community, including faculty meetings, school events, and professional collaboration.
Uphold and support Browne Academy’s mission and core values in all aspects of teaching and community engagement.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in History, Social Studies, Education, or a related field (advanced degree preferred).
Experience teaching middle school students, preferably in an independent school environment.
Strong understanding of adolescent development and middle school pedagogy.
Demonstrated ability to foster discussion-based learning, inquiry, and critical thinking.
Excellent communication, collaboration, and organizational skills.

Competitive Benefits
Browne Academy offers a competitive benefits package including health, life, short-term, and long-term disability insurance, fully or partially paid for by Browne Academy, plus voluntary dental and vision insurance. Browne contributes 5.5% of salary to a 403(b) after one year of service. Faculty receive four weeks of scheduled school holidays, 8 PTO days, and summer off.
Additional benefits include 75% tuition remission for eligible students enrolled at Browne Academy after one year of employment (space permitting), free morning care and aftercare during the school year, 50% off summer camp, and free aftercare for summer camp.
