ABOUT THE JOB
Join us as a Science Teacher in an innovative school in Austin that takes teaching very seriously, on a team that loves working together. This is the dream job for anyone who is passionate about teaching science at a high level to invested and skilled students and wants to work with fellow educators who are optimistic, collaborative, and dedicated.
Long-View’s schedule supports high-level learning and allows teachers to do their best work: you will only teach only two groups or “bands” of learners and will meet with each band for 3 hours a week. The rest of the week you’ll have time for professional interactions with colleagues, time to research, plan, and evaluate student work, and time to invest in the big picture of the school. Plus, our school is 4 days a week. On Fridays our teaching team has a standing morning meeting and then meets in departments or utilizes the afternoon for planning/prep time.
The two bands of learners you will teach fall in the upper elementary age group (~2nd-5th grades). Our school is academically rigorous, so we are generally teaching several grade levels or more above expectation. Thus, if you have taught older children, you may be surprised that you’ll be creating an experience that is more akin to expectations typical in a middle school classroom.
Generally speaking, our goal across our science program is to engage children in the practices of scientists and engineers to develop a nuanced understanding of the natural world. Through hands-on practices, kids discover while there is no universal step-by-step method for scientific inquiry—the scientific approach is defined by shared values such as commitment to evidence-based explanations, rigorous reasoning, and sound justification.
Ultimately, we want our learners to develop a set of skills for solving complex real-world problems. Their grasp of scientific concepts will enable them to make informed decisions on personal and societal issues. We promote critical thinking through rational discourse, skepticism, peer review, and reproducibility, recognizing creativity as a fundamental element in the production of scientific knowledge.

Long-View Micro School offers 80 kids across 2nd through 8th grade an unparalleled education experience. We are not just interested in “doing school” and checking the boxes of all the trappings of a traditional education. We are interested in making sure that the elementary and middle years of a child’s education set the foundation for a lifetime of learning.
Long-View develops thinking skills, agency, curiosity, and investment in learning. We focus on constructing robust knowledge structures and facilitating the development of conceptual understandings that promote transfer and connections. We support children to be active participants in their own learning by explicitly teaching productive learning dispositions, critical listening, the importance of asking questions, how to take intellectual risks, the importance of participating in discussions, and how to learn within a community.
The culture of Long-View is not built around compliance and behavior management, prominent elements of most schools. Instead, we work to create a learning community. We recognize that all conditions for learning can’t be set by the teacher; kids must make contributions to their own learning. Kid...s and adults take responsibility for themselves and others. Finally, our philosophy toward homework, in-school learning opportunities, and out-of-school learning opportunities fosters a deep commitment to “driving your own learning.”
