DESCRIPTION OF RESPONSIBILITIES:

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES – BOARD RELATIONS

1. Brings to the Montessori School of Maui Board of Directors such matters and data as are appropriate to keep the board fully informed to meet its responsibilities.
2. Recommends board policy development as well as strategies for institutional betterment.
3. Maintains contact with the board president to ensure that there are "no surprises." It is expected that the president will also keep the Head fully apprised of board concerns and data.
4. Serve as chief communicator between the board and staff.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES – ORGANIZATION

1. Creates and nurtures an appropriate, strong management team of staff and board members.
2. Promotes an internal organization that permits effective communication up and down.
3. Works to produce smooth day-to-day internal operations.
4. The Head is expected to share and delegate to his/her immediate subordinates such that they will prepare to collectively lead the school should the Head suddenly become incapacitated.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES – PLANNING and ANALYSIS

1. Remains abreast of trends and research in education; particularly those effecting Montessori schools and private-independent school operation and management.

1. Encourages the board to undertake periodic, systematic, long-range planning.
2. Develops tactical plans with the help of key members of the management team.
3. Initiates studies of pertinent data regarding academic performance to facilitate and inspire such plans.
4. Encourages perspective via testing, comparisons with similar institutions, and external analyses and critiques.
5. Participates in committees of volunteers and staff to address topics critical to school development.   

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES – PERSONNEL

1. Issues contracts following the guidelines given by the board
2. Provides for substitute teachers and assures that proper staffing numbers are maintained
3. All staff and personnel issues are to be examined by the Head
4. Implements personnel policies and procedures.
5. Defines the teaching and non-teaching professional staff positions to implement the schools programs and recruits highly effective to fill them, with advice and recommendations from the management team.
6. Assures that the staff understands and shares the schools progressive, humanistic Montessori philosophy and goals.

7. Determines standards and takes appropriate steps to measure and maintain reasonable performance and professional growth among staff; disciplines or dismisses those who fail to meet the standards.

1. Establishes practices and procedures to promote harmonious and constructive relationships

among all personnel.  Consciously works to establish an atmosphere of team building and planning.

1. Maintains personal contact with all school staff members, fostering good public relations, promoting high morale, and identifying personnel problems as early as possible. Encourages similar conduct among subordinates.
2. Maintains regular staff meetings.
3. Provides direct supervision for administrative support staff, including regular job performance evaluations.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES – CURRICULUM

1. Designs, implements and administers student programs and services appropriate to the needs of those enrolled and consistent with the values and teaching styles of a progressive humanistic Montessori education.
2. Determines the scheduling to accommodate these programs and services.
3. Sets standards of participation and achievement in each category.
4. Works to promote harmonious relationships within the school community.
5. Supervises the accreditation process.
6. Reviews all program procedures to insure that systems are in place and are being implemented.
7. Administers policies and procedures governing the student body.
8. Oversees the evaluation of student progress and systems for communicating with parents.
9. Works with the staff to develop and implement procedures for tracking student status and progress.  Meets with the staff regularly to discuss student progress. Facilitates contact and follow-up with families as needed and provides early interventions when concerns are identified.
1. Co-curricular:  Organizes activities, special programs and classes, formal cultural exposures, and athletics sufficient to round out the school’s program and provide for student interest and development.
2. Character Development:  Implements formal and informal programs that relate to high moral and ethical conduct. This includes counseling and advisory programs, and a system of positive discipline that promotes kindness and courtesy.
3. Student Life:  Establishes and oversees programs for after-hours including extended day care and recreational/cultural activities.
10. Works with and advises the Business Manager regarding any additional expenditures which may accompany a new program.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES – ENVIRONMENT

1. Holds general responsibility for the safety of all students, staff and volunteers under the school’s jurisdiction.
2. Strives to create and maintain an aesthetically attractive environment that is compatible with the character of the institution.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES – ENROLLMENT and RECRUITMENT

1. Establishes enrollment objectives with respect to student numbers character and quality.                      
2. Remains abreast of effective marketing concepts and techniques that apply to private-independent schools.
3. Recommends a suitable scholarship program to the board of directors and executes that program.
4. Works with the board to establish and administer standards and policies for admission and dismissals.
5. Maintains full enrollment.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES – DEVELOPMENT

1. Works with Development Director.
2. Advises the Board with respect to fund-raising needs and plans.
3. Actively supports and encourages the school’s fund raising efforts

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES – FACULTY MANAGEMENT

1. Endeavors to see that the facility accommodates the program rather than dictate the program or means of operation.
2. Works with the Business Manager to maintain the operation and maintenance of all facilities.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES – CONSTITUENT RELATIONS

1. Encourages meaningful alumni, parent and past parent participation in events that aid and support the goals of the school.
2. Works to maintain programs that contribute to favorable relationships with the local community; particularly with those people who come into regular contact with the school.
3. Maintains constructive liaisons with other educational institutions and associations.
4. Works to create a harmonious community actively promoting communication between board, staff, PTO and the school community.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES – INSTITUTIONAL IMAGE

1. Interprets the school and its programs to the public and strives to become the personification of the institutions.
2. Functions as a spokesperson for the school.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES – GENERAL ADMINISTRATIVE DUTIES

Responds to questions, concerns or inquiries from parents, employees, Board members and/or general public.

QUALIFICATIONS

• Bachelor’s Degree (required)
• Masters Degree or higher preferred
• Montessori Training and at least 7 years of classroom leadership experience preferred
• A minimum of three (3) years leadership/admin experience in an Independent school
• Excellent communication skills: clear, articulate and professional in speaking and writing
• Demonstrate a willingness to educate and inform the community on an on-going basis
• Excellent organizational skills: able to set priorities and achieve goals
• Ability to keep cognizant of many processes going on simultaneously
• Knowledge of finances, budgetary planning and demonstrated sense of fiscal responsibility
• Ability to take initiative and work independently, as well as be a team player
• Ability to work well with groups: Board Committee, volunteers, school employees, parents
• Ability to delegate and supervise delegated tasks
• Friendly, warm and courteous, with strong listening skills, integrity and diplomacy
• Enjoys meeting with people, personable yet professional in demeanor, especially on the phone and in personal meetings
• Ability to establish rapport and trust
• Demonstrate a willingness to uphold ethical standards in educational and leadership practices
• Adept computer skills including: Microsoft Word, Excel and data base systems
