The High School Science Teacher is a key member of the Vanguard faculty/staff and is responsible for class instruction as assigned by the Associate Head of School-Faculty. This position reports to the Department Head, Associate Head of School-Faculty, and contributes to the school’s mission of cultivating scholars, leaders, and citizens.
Key Responsibilities:
Teach and reinforce scientific practices, including data analysis, experimentation, modeling, and evidence-based reasoning
Foster curiosity, critical thinking, and real-world connections to scientific concepts
Experience with laboratory instruction and safety procedures
Maintain a safe, organized laboratory and classroom environment, following all safety protocols
Willingness to complete required laboratory safety training and consistently enforce safety procedures
If applicable, teach another science course or elective(s) outside of your field of study
Collaborate with the Science Department Head, team members, and Director of Curriculum and Instruction in thoughtful planning through alignment and departmental needs to ensure courses fit the needs of divisional curriculum goals.
Chemistry
Teach high school chemistry, including atomic structure, chemical reactions, stoichiometry, thermochemistry, acids and bases, and properties of matter
Plan and implement laboratory experiments that develop student skills in measurement, analysis, and scientific reasoning
Emphasize lab safety, chemical hygiene, and proper storage and disposal of materials
Use demonstrations, modeling, and technology to make abstract chemical concepts accessible
Experience teaching quantitative problem-solving in chemistry. Support students in applying mathematical reasoning to chemical problem-solving
Ability to make complex concepts accessible and engaging for diverse learners
Teach and support Advanced Placement (AP) Chemistry, emphasizing laboratory investigations, quantitative problem-solving, and alignment with the College Board course frameworks and AP exam expectations
Strong knowledge of laboratory safety standards and procedures
Qualified candidates must hold a bachelor’s degree in the subject or a related field or significant experience teaching Chemistry at the High School level. Passionate about teaching, experts in their fields, and dedicated to helping all students achieve their personal best.
Demonstrated interest in, commitment to, and ability to differentiate instruction for students of a variety of academic levels.
Demonstrated experience working with adolescents and understanding their social-emotional and academic development is essential.
Willingness to participate in interdisciplinary and innovative curricular design and partnership. Demonstrated ability to integrate classroom technologies to enhance teaching and learning.
Assess student progress through formative and summative assessments; analyze results to guide instruction.
Ability to balance academic rigor with creativity and innovation. Provide timely, constructive feedback to support student growth.
Ability to demonstrate a growth mindset, optimism, and a belief that all students can learn. A commitment to ongoing professional growth and development.
Attention to detail, follow-through, and organization, and a genuine enthusiasm, positive presence, and flexibility.
Work collaboratively with colleagues and parents/guardians Serving as an advisor to a select number of students. Participate in/facilitate extracurricular activities, enrichment programming, or clubs, as well as other community-building events.
Create a positive, structured classroom environment that promotes student engagement and academic growth
