| Director of Jewish Life and Learning Levey Day School, located in Portland, Maine, and serving students in grades pre-K through 8, seeks a Director of Jewish Life and Learning for the 2021-2022 school year. The start date is August 2, 2021. As the school’s primary Hebrew and Judaics teacher, the successful candidate will advance the school’s mission to provide students of all backgrounds with a nurturing community and challenging, personalized curriculum infused with Jewish values and Hebrew language. The Director of Jewish Life and Learning is the linchpin of the Hebrew and Judaics portion of Levey’s academic program and sets the Jewish tone of the school. The Director, who reports directly to the Head of School, is responsible for curricular design and implementation as well as for mentoring and collaborating with homeroom teachers toward an integrated curriculum. The Director infuses the school with Jewish values and ruach. Duties and Responsibilities - Designs and teaches an ability-based Hebrew language curriculum for Grades 1-8 focused on reading, speaking, and writing.
- Designs and teaches a values-oriented Jewish texts and traditions curriculum for Grades 1-8.
- Collaborates with homeroom teachers to integrate Jewish history and literature into the social studies and language arts curricula for Grades 1-8, and mentors those teachers to teach that material effectively.
- Designs and implements a tefillot curriculum for Grades 1-8 (in two age-based groups) that fosters personal spirituality, leadership skills, and other dimensions of social and emotional growth in addition to proficiency with reading and comprehension of traditional texts.
- Plans and leads Shabbat and holiday celebrations.
- Works with the Head of School and faculty colleagues on service learning and tikkun olam projects and on assessing applications for admissions.
- Creates Judaic educational materials and programs for parents.
- Serves as a resource to all and an inspiring example of Levey values both within the school and in the broader community.
