POSITION OVERVIEW The Learning Specialist uses research-based programs to deliver targeted reading, math, and writing interventions to students in small-group settings. The Learning Specialist guides students in developing compensatory strategies, including proficiency in assistive technology. The Learning Specialist provides support to students in developing executive functioning skills. The Learning Specialist collaborates closely with teachers to scaffold and differentiate the curriculum. The Learning Specialist reviews student assessment results, monitors progress, and adapts instruction accordingly. The Learning Specialist collaborates closely with teachers, administrators, and student service specialists, including literacy specialists, academic support directors, and counselors. The Learning Specialist reports directly to the Head of Student Services.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Proctor assessments, including make-up exams, reassessments, and other evaluations as assigned.
Implement and monitor approved testing accommodations accurately and confidentially, in alignment with school policies and student learning plans.
Ensure the testing environment is quiet, orderly, and compliant with assessment protocols.
Maintain vigilance during testing to uphold academic honesty and address any irregularities promptly and professionally.
Manage and maintain a detailed testing schedule
Track completed assessments and communicate testing status as needed with relevant faculty and staff.
Communicate clearly and professionally with teachers regarding assessment logistics, expectations, and completion timelines.
Collaborate with counselors, learning specialists, and administrators to support students requiring accommodations.
Maintain confidentiality when handling student information and assessment materials.
Respond to student questions or concerns about testing procedures in a consistent, professional manner.
QUALIFICATIONS
Strong sense of commitment to the Milken Community School Mission.
Masters Degree in Special Education, Educational Therapy or a closely related field, and a minimum of five years of classroom teaching experience.
Highly knowledgeable of child development with an expertise in needs unique to middle school-age students.
Training in reading and writing intervention programs such as Lindamood Bell Reading Systems, Orton Gillingham, Jane Schaffer Writing Systems and Writing Revolution..
Highly knowledgeable in best practices of curriculum development, instruction, differentiation and assessment.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
Inspires collaboration among colleagues and is inclusive.
Organized, flexible, able to contend with complexity and nuance.
Proficient with educational technology platforms.
Able to provide leadership and expertise in interpreting and disseminating data and psycho-educational assessment results.
Effective in communicating with parents, administration, faculty, outside service providers, and the extended educational community.
