Position Summary The Pingry School seeks a dynamic and intellectually engaging Upper School Chemistry Teacher for the 2026-2027 school year. This role is designed for an educator who views science not merely as a collection of facts to be memorized, but as a rigorous process of inquiry, evidence-based reasoning, and laboratory discovery.
We are looking for collaborative educators who thrive in a student-centered environment where the laboratory is a hub for exploration and critical thinking. The ideal candidate is a versatile practitioner who can inspire a love for scientific discovery in Upper School students, guiding them through a robust curriculum that ranges from the foundational "Chem/Bio" sequence to advanced, research-oriented electives. We seek professionals who prioritize active, inquiry-based learning and possess the relational skills to support the academic and emotional growth of teenagers. Beyond the laboratory bench, these educators serve as dedicated mentors and advisors who foster a culture of curiosity, persistence, and intellectual risk-taking.
The Upper School Science Department seeks professionals who:
Facilitates Instructional Excellence: You develop well-researched, organized, and logical lessons that promote engagement with essential scientific questions, prioritizing inquiry-based discovery over traditional lecturing.
Prioritizes Chemistry but has Curricular Versatility: You are a Chemistry educator first and foremost, though your versatility as a practitioner who is comfortable teaching across the core secondary sequence (Biology or Physics) is a significant bonus. You are excited to lead specialized electives and can pivot your expertise to meet the needs of a diverse science curriculum.
Mentors Student Researchers: You excel at coaching students through the research process, whether in the classroom or through signature programs like our Independent Research Teams (IRT).
Collaborates on Immersive Experiences: You enjoy working across departments to design innovative Spring Intensives and interdisciplinary projects that connect complex scientific concepts to real-world applications and professional fields.
Ensures Curricular Consistency and Equity: You value partnering closely with departmental colleagues to align on content and assessment. You are committed to ensuring that every student, regardless of their section, receives a consistent, high-quality, and equitable learning experience.
Fosters a Mindset of Discovery: You meet students where they are, whether you are a veteran educator or just starting your career, with a natural instinct for turning student curiosity into scientific discovery.
Empowers Student Agency: You are skilled at building student self-advocacy and resilience, using student choice and authentic assessments to help learners navigate the complexities of the scientific method.
Responsibilities
Instruction: Teach three Chemistry courses across the science curriculum, including core laboratory sequences and advanced electives.
Lab Leadership: Maintain a safe and organized laboratory environment, guiding students in the proper use of equipment and ethical data collection.
Advising: Serve as an advisor to a group of students, supporting their academic, social, and emotional development as they navigate the Upper School experience.
Spring Intensive Development: Collaborate with faculty peers to design and execute a dedicated Spring Intensive course.
Research Mentorship: Support the Pingry School Research Program by guiding students in developing research questions and analyzing novel problems.
Community Contribution: Fulfill an additional “plus one” requirement (e.g., coaching, club leadership, or community service coordination).
Professional Engagement: Participate in department collaborations to refine curriculum and tailor instructional approaches to diverse student needs.
Qualifications
Educational Background: A bachelor’s degree in a scientific field (such as Chemistry, Biology, Physics, or Earth Science) is required; an advanced degree is preferred.
Subject Matter Expertise: Deep mastery of laboratory science and the ability to teach multiple levels, including college-prep, Honors, and Advanced Placement (AP).
Instructional Vision: A passion for, or experience with, building a classroom where students lead the way. We welcome candidates who are eager to learn how to facilitate inquiry-based labs and support the unique developmental needs of Upper School students.
Inclusive Excellence: A deep-seated commitment to cultivating a culture of belonging where every student feels seen and valued. This includes designing an inclusive laboratory that ensures equitable access to high-level STEM for a diverse student body.
Community Mindset: The interpersonal skills necessary to build a supportive community in alignment with Pingry's mission and Honor Code.
Tech Literacy: Proficiency in educational technology and laboratory software (e.g., Google Suite, Canvas, and digital lab probes).
