The New Community School empowers bright, talented students in grades 5-12, who are challenged by dyslexia and related language-based learning differences. The innovative and research-based college preparatory curriculum utilizes a customized educational approach to build skills in language and math and to foster academic and personal strengths - igniting the passions and gifts of unique minds.
The New Community School is currently hiring a Language Fundamentals Teacher for the 2026-2027 school year.
The teacher will guide students in developing a knowledge base of the structure of the English language and in developing strategies for applying effective learning skills to increasingly difficult reading and writing tasks.
Job Description:
Teach reading, including syllable patterns, morphology, fluency, vocabulary, comprehension,
spelling, and writing skills in a small group or individual setting.
Administer and/or interpret language skill and psychological testing.
Develop and implement individualized instructional plans for each student.
Use a diagnostic/prescriptive approach for the planning and delivery of instruction and to remediate basic language skills.
Utilize Orton-Gillingham (structured, systematic, and multi-sensory) techniques and strategies.
Facilitate ongoing communication with parents regarding student progress, including written reports and parent conferences in accordance with the school calendar.
Communicate with academic teachers concerning appropriate academic accommodations and learning styles of students.
Serve as the faculty advisor to 2-4 students.
Facilitate and participate in student life activities.
Participate in the school’s extensive pre-service/in-service training and mentoring programs.
Perform other supervisory duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
The ideal candidate must possess:
a strong interest in working closely with students to improve their language, reading, and writing skills.
a master’s degree as a Reading Specialist, in Learning Disabilities, in Special Education and/or certification in multisensory instruction (ex. AOGPE) is preferred.
a strong interest in learning disabilities, exploring varied instructional strategies, and working with students who have struggled in previous school placements.
the ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, faculty, staff, parents, and the broader community.
a strong desire and willingness to grow professionally and work as part of a team.
Salary Information: Salary is commensurate with experience.
