We began our elementary school with a single kindergarten class and the idea that learning should be joyful, student-driven, and inclusive. Over the years, we have developed a strong commitment to a curriculum that is project-based and anti-biased. We have continued to grow in order to foster students through their middle school years in a K-8 environment. As such, we are seeking an experienced and passionate Science Teacher to join our middle school team. In addition to teaching courses in 5th-8th grade, the person hired will also serve as an advisor and be an integral component of the school community. This is a unique opportunity to work closely with our team to shape a meaningful, rigorous, and joyful program.
Responsibilities:
Maintain and develop a curriculum for the middle school Science program
Teach 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th grade classes
Use a variety of assessments, assignment types, and experiences to measure student learning and drive instruction
Provide academic remediation and enrichment during WIN periods
Serve as a middle school advisor
Provide coverages as needed, including weekly lunch/recess duties
Actively participate in a learning community, including divisional meetings, peer observations, planning meetings, and staff meetings.
Collaborate with middle school teachers, learning specialists, and the division head to plan out and provide high-quality, differentiated, and relevant instruction to all children
Regularly communicate with families through school-sanctioned online platforms
Integrate The Co-op School Core Values into classroom culture, units of study, and interactions with staff, families, and students
Integrate the real world and the surrounding community into units of study, lessons, and classroom culture
Maintain positive relationships with students, families, and colleagues
Maintain confidentiality with student information and records
Create a positive and safe classroom culture and community
We are looking for a candidate who possesses the following skills and qualities:
A commitment to working with middle school students and an enthusiasm for making real-world connections through the fields of science
Bachelor’s degree, Master’s preferred; academic program focus in math, science, and/or education-related fields
3 years+ experience teaching students in grades 5-8
Experience working with children with special needs, as some students have IEPs
A commitment to social justice and anti-bias curriculum
Enthusiasm for the opportunities and challenges inherent in working with middle school students
A willingness to collaborate with others and continually inspire students to love learning
A reflective practitioner in a state of constant professional growth
A willingness to share their craft with others
An ability and willingness to differentiate instruction
Commitment to and knowledge of progressive education and inquiry-based teaching and learning
A positive attitude, flexible approach, and a sense of humor
