Groundskeeper Lawrence Academy (LA) is a boarding and day school in Groton, MA, serving 400 students in grades 9-12. LA enjoys its heritage as one of the oldest independent schools in the country while embracing a contemporary student-centered approach that supports its mission. In LA’s tightly knit environment, students are supported and encouraged to exercise their minds, discover their voices, learn creatively, and take their own initiative. The academic program is uniquely hands-on and allows students to discover how their education can be applied in daily life. LA is seeking an experienced and motivated groundskeeper to join our Buildings and Grounds team.
Summary Under the supervision of the Director of Buildings and Grounds, the campus groundskeeper performs a variety of sometimes strenuous physical tasks dedicated to the daily care and maintenance of hard and soft scape for grounds, lawns, shrubs, trees, and plants using appropriate equipment, supplies, methods and techniques.
Key Responsibilities: • Cut lawns and fields. • Trim and edge around walks, flower beds, fences and walls. • Spray and fertilize lawns, shrubs, and trees. • Rake and sweep leaves and cuttings. • Water lawns, fields and shrubs. • Repair lawns, fields, walks, driveways, walls, fences, roads, flower beds, signs and some sports equipment. • Remove snow and ice from walks, driveways roads, roofs and parking areas using plows, snow blowers, shovels, tractors and sweepers. • Spread salt and sand on areas as needed. • Clean and repair drainage ditches, culverts and gutters • Sharpen and make repairs on equipment. • Operate a wide variety of power tools and grounds maintenance equipment using established health and safety procedures. • Lines and lays out athletic fields and takes care of seasonal athletic equipment. • Pick up trash and debris on campus. • Work nights and weekends for special events and emergencies. • Assist with function setups/takedowns including moving tables, chairs, soft furniture, boxes, sound systems, platforms, etc. • At times, the school has activities or emergencies that occur outside the normal working hours and may require staff to work additional hours. • Keep storage areas clean and organized. • Support in other facilities-related activities as needed.

Required Qualifications: • Basic education (high school) plus one to two years’ relevant experience preferred. • Comply with any safety rules and become familiar with school-wide safety procedures. • Base knowledge and skills related to the care and maintenance of lawns, flowers, trees, and shrubs. • Possession of a valid MA driver’s license. Acceptable driving record to operate school vehicles. • Ability to operate hand tools, equipment, and vehicles common to the position. • Ability to communicate verbally and in writing and to take instructions both verbally and via written communication. • Ability to work with other members of the department and interact with the public. • Applicants must be authorized to work in the United States. The school does not sponsor employment visas. • Must successfully pass all required background checks (driving record review, a Massachusetts Criminal Offender Record Information (CORI) check, a Sexual Offender Registry Information (SORI) check, and a fingerprint-based state and national criminal history record review).
Physical Requirements: • Ability to work outside in all weather. • Should be able to walk, bend and climb and be on their feet for extended periods of time. • Must be capable to lift up to 50-pounds individually and up to 100-pounds with assistance, 0-72-inch height range, on an occasional to frequent basis. • Ability to carry up to 35-pounds, at waist level for up to 25 feet on an occasional to frequent basis. • Must be in good general health and be able to work outside in inclement weather. • Must not show allergic reactions to chemical substances and the more common environmental factors associated with the position.
