Founded in 1889, Marlborough School is an independent girls' college-preparatory school for grades 7 through 12 located in Los Angeles, California. Marlborough is the oldest independent girls’ school in the Southern California region. OPPORTUNITY STATEMENT
Reporting directly to the Associate Head of School for Academics and Student Life, the Dean of Academics teaches two courses and works in partnership with the Academic Leadership Team (Associate Head of School for Academics and Student Life/Head of Upper School, Head of Middle School, Dean of Faculty, and Department Heads) to provide vision and direction for the 7th–12th Grade academic program. Focusing on curriculum, instruction, and assessment, the Dean of Academics supports the continued development of a rigorous, engaging, and mission-aligned academic experience for students. ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES
Curriculum Leadership and Program Development
Works closely with the Academic Leadership Team to support and guide the ongoing development and implementation of the 7–12 academic program.
Leads periodic curriculum review and renewal processes to ensure coherence, rigor, and alignment with the school’s mission and strategic priorities.
Supports vertical alignment of curriculum across grade levels to ensure thoughtful progression of skills and knowledge.
Works with Department Heads to support interdisciplinary initiatives and innovative academic programming.
Serves as co-liaison to the Equity, Enrollment, and Education committee of the Board of Trustees.
Instructional Practice and Faculty Support
Serves as a resource for faculty on emerging best practices in pedagogy, instructional design, assessment, and educational technology.
Guides committee work related to teaching and learning.
Contributes to the faculty summative evaluation process in collaboration with the Academic Leadership Team.
Assessment Philosophy and Academic Policies
Collaborates with Associate Head for Academics and Student Life and Division Heads to review and refine academic policies related to assessment, grading, My Marlborough, and student learning.
Creates and manages the annual assessment calendar.
Co-leads the Academic Integrity Council in partnership with the Dean of Students, guiding academic integrity processes and facilitating conversations with students and faculty.
Program Evaluation and Student Feedback
Coordinates the Course Feedback/Student Experience Survey process and analyzes results to inform program improvement.
Organizes and facilitates the Student Academic Advisory Council (SAAC), engaging students in thoughtful dialogue about the academic experience and program development.
Faculty Development
Co-chairs the Faculty Professional Growth and Development Committee with the Dean of Faculty to support faculty learning and innovation.
Collaborates with the Academic Leadership Team to design and lead professional growth days for all employees.
Partners with the Dean of Faculty to plan and facilitate sessions for new faculty orientation and faculty professional growth and development.
Academic Leadership and Collaboration
Co-leads Department Head meetings with members of the Academic Leadership Team.
Participates in faculty hiring processes as a member of interview committees.
Equity and Inclusive Pedagogy
Works with the Director of Equity, Community, and Belonging to assess and strengthen curriculum through the lens of equity literacy and inclusive pedagogy.
Academic Program Operations
Creates, updates, and manages the dissemination of the Curriculum Guide.
Manages placement testing for all incoming students and works with Department Heads on the placement process for all returning students.
Manages the University of California A–G course submission and approval process.
Contributes to accreditation processes and other institutional initiatives related to teaching and learning.
Collaborates with the Dean of Students to organize and manage the Academic Field Trip Day.
COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS
Competitive annual salary range of $120,000 to $145,000, commensurate with qualifications and experience

QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university; Master’s degree in a relevant academic field preferred
Minimum of 5-7 years of progressive experience in teaching or academic leadership, with demonstrated experience in curriculum work, instructional design, or faculty leadership
Strategic and visionary thinker who sees the big picture of a 7–12 academic program and translates vision into clear, actionable priorities
Deeply knowledgeable about teaching and learning, grounded in current research and best practices in pedagogy, assessment, and adolescent development
Keeps student learning and well-being at the center of all decisions
Active collaborator who intentionally brings multiple perspectives and voices into the decision-making process and builds strong, trust-based relationships across the community
Exercises discretion, consistency, and sound judgment in complex situations
