The Knox School is seeking an enthusiastic, collaborative, and student-centered Athletic Director to lead and grow our vibrant athletics program. This is an exciting opportunity for a dynamic leader who believes in the power of athletics to build confidence, character, teamwork, and school spirit.
The Athletic Director (AD) will provide vision, leadership, and administrative oversight for all aspects of Knox athletics while fostering an inclusive and supportive environment where every student-athlete can thrive. The AD will champion health and wellness, sportsmanship, and personal growth, ensuring that the athletic experience reflects the mission and values of Knox School and aligns with PSAA and NYSAIS standards and regulations.
At Knox, students have the opportunity to participate in a wide range of athletic programs, including Soccer, Volleyball, Basketball, Tennis, Badminton, Golf, Crew and Equestrian. We are proud of our tradition of teamwork, school pride, and encouraging students of all skill levels to participate and grow through athletics.
Key responsibilities include the following categories:
Leadership & Vision
Develop, implement, and continually strengthen a comprehensive athletics program that supports students of all experience and skill levels.
Foster a welcoming and inclusive athletic culture that values teamwork, integrity, resilience, and respect.
Inspire school spirit and encourage broad student participation in athletics and wellness initiatives.
Serve as Knox School’s representative to PSAA and NYSAIS athletic committees, attending league meetings and collaborating with member schools.
Program Management
Oversee scheduling for all athletic contests, practices, and tournaments.
Recruit, hire, mentor, and evaluate coaches who reflect the values and mission of Knox School.
Support coaches in creating positive, development-focused experiences for student-athletes.
Ensure compliance with league and school policies related to eligibility, safety, and conduct.
Operations & Logistics
Coordinate transportation, facilities, referees, and equipment for athletic practices and events.
Manage the athletics budget, including uniforms, equipment purchases, facility needs, and program expenses.
Partner closely with school leadership, faculty, and staff to integrate athletics into the broader student experience.
Organize and promote athletic events that strengthen community engagement and school pride.
Student & Community Engagement
Encourage student participation in and committment to the Knox athletics program.
Serve as a mentor and advocate for student-athletes as they navigate academic and athletic commitments.
Build strong relationships with families, alumni, and community supporters of Knox athletics.
Help create a positive and spirited game-day atmosphere that reflects the values of Knox School.
3–5 years of experience in athletic administration and/or coaching in an educational setting.
Familiarity with PSAA and NYSAIS policies and procedures, or a willingness to learn.
Strong leadership, organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills.
A demonstrated commitment to fostering an inclusive community and positive school culture.
CPR/AED and First Aid certification, or willingness to obtain certification.
Additional Information
This is a full-time, year-round position that includes evening and weekend responsibilities. The Athletic Director should be an active and visible presence within the Knox community, enthusiastically supporting students, coaches, and families both on and off the field.
