Wilmington Friends School is a Preschool to 12 Quaker, college preparatory, day school located in Wilmington, Delaware. The school enrolls approximately 720 students and is currently seeking a College Guidance Counselor to join the College Office for the 2026-27 school year.
Wilmington Friends School offers a college preparatory curriculum—including athletics, the arts and community service—in which Quaker values and high expectations are mutually supportive. The defining belief of Quakerism is that there is “that of God” in everyone. That belief gives rise to a school community that welcomes a variety of faith traditions and where we share an obligation to seek and answer what is best in ourselves and in others. Students at Friends are challenged to realize their potential: as learners, well-prepared to succeed in college and career; as leaders, recognizing their power and opportunity to be agents of change; and as active and responsible members of communities, from the classroom to the world. The school seeks to serve students, ages two through grade twelve, who demonstrate ongoing promise in their ability to succeed at Friends, both academically and in meeting expectations for integrity and conduct. Wilmington Friends School is an International Baccalaureate world school and offers the Diploma Programme in grades 11 and 12. All teachers are expected to participate in the preparation of our students for this international standard.
A highly qualified candidate for this position is one who:
Supports a diverse group of students through all phases of the college application process, providing individualized guidance for every Wilmington Friends Upper School family.
Assists students and families with questions of financial aid and standardized testing, in addition to the elements of the college research application process.
Has experience working within a college guidance office in an independent school and/or in a competitive college admissions office.
Has excellent communication and interpersonal skills, including public speaking and presentations, helping to deliver college-related programs for students and families throughout the year.
Understands the ever-changing college admissions landscape, and keeps up to date with current trends.
Is prepared to write comprehensive and individualized letters of recommendation.
Is comfortable utilizing the functionality of the various online systems used in our college counseling office for academic information, applications, and research.
Seeks opportunities to grow their knowledge of the college environment through college visits, conferences, and other professional development activities.
Works collaboratively with faculty to understand and support the students’ academic and extracurricular lives.
Understands and loves working with high school-aged students and their families.
Is committed to and interested in working in a diverse, multicultural environment.
Is willing and eager to take on co-curricular responsibilities as appropriate.
Is aligned with the mission and core Quaker values of Wilmington Friends School.
If interested, please send a cover letter, resume, and list of three references to Candice Culmer-Smith, Assistant to the Head of Upper School at cculmersmith@wilmingtonfriends.org. You can address the cover letter to J.R. Neiswender, Head of Upper School.
