Magellan International School in Austin, Texas, is seeking a College & School Counselor. This person will work with Secondary School students (grades 9 and up). This role connects students’ personal, social, academic, and career experiences to college planning. It involves helping students explore their academic interests, investigating colleges (both domestically and internationally), and assisting students and parents in navigating the complexities of the admissions requirements, standardized testing, and financial aid. Collaborate with key stakeholders and use data to inform and grow the college counseling program. Also, serves as a resource for students, faculty, and families, helping them navigate the challenges of academic life and personal well-being.
Essential Functions as they relate to:
College Advising
Build and sustain a college and career school-wide culture.
Encourage students to explore their personal strengths, interests, values, and aspirations when selecting potential career paths and colleges and universities.
Coordinate field trips to college campuses and college fairs.
Organize informational sessions, and visits from universities and other post-secondary institutions.
Support students in exploring potential careers by organizing career fairs, facilitating networking connections with the school’s advancement office for internships, and coordinating job shadowing opportunities.
Assist students in identifying and applying to appropriate colleges and universities, both domestically and internationally, that are aligned with their interests and academic profile.
Assist in the dissemination of college information to students and parents through scheduled presentations and individual conferences on topics such as financial aid, scholarship opportunities, college admissions trends, and IB-specific considerations for college applications.
Help students craft compelling college applications, including advising on essays, resumes, and recommendation letters.
Coordinate with students and parents on college application timelines, assisting students in meeting deadlines for applications, testing, and other requirements.
Support scholarship search, application, and award processes for students.
Write letters of recommendation for students applying to universities and assist teachers in writing quality letters of recommendation.
Support students and families with standardized testing by providing guidance on test options, registration, interpretation of results, and test prep resources.
Maintain knowledge of trends in college admissions and university programs, including changes in application requirements, deadlines, and scholarship opportunities.
Maintain accurate and up-to-date records tracking student application data, including success rates, college acceptances, and financial aid outcomes.
Meet the ethical standards of the college admissions process as articulated by the National Association for College Admission Counseling.
Academic Advising
Assist students and parents in course selection, creating and maintaining four-year plans, and understanding the components of the IB Diploma.
Track student progress toward meeting graduation requirements and verify students’ eligibility for graduation. Collaborate with the DP Coordinator, who will be the one to handle tracking of DP requirements.
Serve as a liaison with students and families seeking additional course work from approved outside providers (i.e. Austin Community College, UT High School and Texas Tech K-12). The DP Coordinator will take care of Pamoja Online Courses.
Transcript Management
Review incoming records for new students to determine high school credits and course placement.
Maintain accurate and up-to-date academic transcripts.
Prepare and send official transcripts to colleges, universities, or other schools as requested by students.
Process transcript requests and ensure timely delivery.
Student Support Resources
Submit testing accommodation requests to college admissions testing providers.
Support students with academic, behavioral, emotional, and psychological needs offering guidance, individual counselor or small group opportunities when challenges arise.
Lead social-emotional learning, well-being, and human development lessons.
Respond to concerns from students, parents, teachers and administrators.
Have knowledge of current mental health issues, assess student needs following school policy and protocol, and make appropriate referrals as needed.
Use specialized skills to support students in crisis situations requiring an immediate response.
Maintain knowledge of resources within the community.
Participate in the day-to-day life of the school community and further the school’s mission.
Work together with other counselors in Secondary School Wellness Day and other social-emotional initiatives and campaigns.

Qualifications
Master’s degree & Licensed School Counselor or Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW)
Experience in mental health services with a focus on child and adolescent development
Experience in therapeutic intervention and crisis management is beneficial but not required
Prior experience working in a school setting
Knowledge of the college admissions process

Work Environment
This job operates in a classroom environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines. This role requires lifting, bending, standing, and stooping. Work is performed indoors and outdoors.
Position Type and Expected Hours of Work
“Core” work hours: 8:15 am to 4:15 pm from Tuesdays to Fridays and 8:15 am to 5:30 pm on Mondays. Availability during occasional nights and weekend events.
Travel
Some out-of-area travel may be expected, but is not common.

A criminal history background check will be required for finalist(s) under consideration for this position.
