The ideal candidate is a skilled educator who designs rigorous and relevant instruction, builds strong relationships with adolescents, and creates learning experiences grounded in inquiry, discussion, writing, and civic engagement. This role supports students in thinking historically—analyzing sources, forming evidence-based arguments, and connecting the past to contemporary issues—while reflecting Lynnhaven’s commitment to progressive education, experiential learning, and mastery-based growth.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Teaching & Learning
Teach assigned history/social studies courses (specific courses determined by program needs and candidate strengths).
Plan and deliver engaging lessons that prioritize historical thinking, discussion-based learning, and student voice.
Use primary and secondary sources to develop students’ skills in analysis, argumentation, research, and academic writing.
Differentiate instruction to meet a range of learner profiles and learning needs.
Design assessments aligned to course outcomes and mastery-based expectations; provide timely, meaningful feedback.
Maintain accurate records of student progress in accordance with school policies and timelines.
Experiential Learning & Student Engagement
Integrate experiential learning opportunities, including local/community-based experiences when appropriate.
Create classroom experiences that promote curiosity, reflection, and respectful dialogue.
Foster a learning environment where students feel known, challenged, and supported.
Student Support & Family Communication
Build strong relationships with students and consistently advocate for their success.
Communicate proactively with families regarding progress, strengths, and concerns.
Collaborate with colleagues and student support personnel to implement accommodations and instructional strategies as needed.
Faculty Collaboration & School Community
Participate in faculty meetings, professional development, and required trainings.
Contribute to school-wide programming, including Morning Meeting, Community Time, and assigned house-based structures.
Support school events and traditions, including occasional evening responsibilities (e.g., exhibitions, family events, student programs).
Collaborate with colleagues on interdisciplinary learning experiences and shared community goals.
Physical & Other Requirements
Must be able to lift and/or carry at least 15 pounds.
Must be willing to drive a 15-passenger school bus/van as needed for school-related activities and experiential learning opportunities (training and eligibility requirements may apply).

Lynnhaven School is committed to building a diverse and inclusive community and encourages candidates who will contribute to that mission to apply.
Lynnhaven School provides a social learning experience built on progressive education principles inspired by great philosophers such as John Dewey, Francis Wayland Parker, Booker T. Washington, and Lucy Sprague Mitchell. We look for driven, creative students who want to and can take advantage of their intellectual freedom and autonomy in the classroom and across their school experience.
Lynnhaven teachers describe their most successful students as those with an appetite for learning, eager to seize responsibility for their education, and are team players. In addition, Lynnhaven works best for learners excited by their own curiosity and who take ownership of their learning. As a result, Lynnhaven students regularly devise questions, challenge assumptions, and propose new directions to pursue.
Our students experience a significant increase in the amount of information they retain when given the opportunity to practice what they are learning in the form of hands-on activities. Studies have shown that when students sit and listen intently but passively in a lecture-style environment, they retain 20 percent of the presented information. When they are given the opportunity to pr...actice what they have just learned, that percentage increases to 75 percent. A Lynnhaven lesson often includes stimulating, active, and engaging activities.
Seven competencies anchor Lynnhaven's social learning environment called the Sassafras Seven, which includes critical thinking, creativity, connection, collaboration, curiosity, communication, and civic engagement that represent a well-rounded citizen capable of success in the 21st century.
