Lynnhaven School seeks a dynamic, hands-on Applied Arts Teacher for the 2026–2027 school year. This role is designed for an educator who thrives beyond traditional classroom boundaries and can facilitate skill-based, real-world learning experiences that connect creativity, culture, and authentic application. The ideal candidate MUST be able to teach Art or a world language, preferably Spanish, and additionally teach one to two electives based on strengths and passion—such as music, woodworking, theatre, design/maker projects, creative writing, digital media, photography, or other applied offerings aligned to the teacher’s discipline and skill set.
The Applied Arts Teacher will help students learn by doing—through language study, studios, workshops, performances, and community-based experiences—while supporting Lynnhaven’s progressive model.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Instruction & Course Facilitation
Teach Art or World Language (based on candidate expertise and program needs).
Teach one to two additional electives (e.g., music, woodworking, theatre, maker/design, digital media, or other applied offerings) depending on skills and interest.
Plan and deliver engaging lessons that prioritize active learning, student choice, and authentic outcomes (projects, performances, exhibitions, portfolios).
Differentiate instruction to support a wide range of learners and learning profiles.
Maintain accurate student progress records and support consistent communication regarding growth and expectations.
Applied & Experiential Learning Design
Design learning experiences that connect course content to real-world applications through hands-on practice and project completion.
When appropriate, incorporate community-based experiences, local resources, and partnership opportunities to enrich student learning.
Support student showcases, performances, demonstrations, exhibits, or portfolio presentations.
Student Support & School Community
Build strong relationships with students and create a positive, inclusive learning environment.
Communicate proactively with families regarding student progress, projects, and participation expectations.
Participate in school routines and structures as assigned (Morning Meeting, Community Time, House activities).
Collaboration & Professional Responsibilities
Collaborate with faculty to support interdisciplinary connections when appropriate.
Participate in meetings, professional development, and required trainings.
Support school events and occasional evening obligations tied to student exhibitions, performances, or community events.
Qualifications
Required
Demonstrated ability to teach Art or a World language to adolescents.
Ability and willingness to teach one to two electives beyond the primary discipline (e.g., music, theatre, woodworking, maker-based offerings, digital media), depending on skills and interest.
Strong facilitation skills and the ability to lead hands-on learning environments safely and effectively.
Strong communication skills and a commitment to relationship-centered teaching.
Comfort working in a progressive, student-centered school environment.
Experience supporting students with learning differences and implementing accommodations.
Familiarity with exhibitions, showcases, portfolios, or competency/mastery-based assessments.

Lynnhaven School is committed to building a diverse and inclusive community and encourages candidates who will contribute to that mission to apply.
Lynnhaven School provides a social learning experience built on progressive education principles inspired by great philosophers such as John Dewey, Francis Wayland Parker, Booker T. Washington, and Lucy Sprague Mitchell. We look for driven, creative students who want to and can take advantage of their intellectual freedom and autonomy in the classroom and across their school experience.
Lynnhaven teachers describe their most successful students as those with an appetite for learning, eager to seize responsibility for their education, and are team players. In addition, Lynnhaven works best for learners excited by their own curiosity and who take ownership of their learning. As a result, Lynnhaven students regularly devise questions, challenge assumptions, and propose new directions to pursue.
Our students experience a significant increase in the amount of information they retain when given the opportunity to practice what they are learning in the form of hands-on activities. Studies have shown that when students sit and listen intently but passively in a lecture-style environment, they retain 20 percent of the presented information. When they are given the opportunity to pr...actice what they have just learned, that percentage increases to 75 percent. A Lynnhaven lesson often includes stimulating, active, and engaging activities.
Seven competencies anchor Lynnhaven's social learning environment called the Sassafras Seven, which includes critical thinking, creativity, connection, collaboration, curiosity, communication, and civic engagement that represent a well-rounded citizen capable of success in the 21st century.
