JOB DESCRIPTION: The Middle School Math and Science Teacher is a dynamic educator who creates rigorous, engaging learning experiences that support and stretch every student. Working collaboratively across the middle school team, this teacher actively shapes Berkeley Hall’s middle school math and science programs by designing responsive, differentiated curriculum that meets students where they are, fosters curiosity, and builds the critical thinking and problem-solving skills that extend beyond the classroom.
This position includes but is not limited to the following duties:
Curriculum & Instruction
Plans and implements engaging, developmentally appropriate lessons in middle school mathematics and science (earth, life, and physical science as applicable).
Teaches mathematical reasoning, problem-solving skills, scientific concepts, and scientific inquiry through hands-on learning, experiments, and real-world applications.
Demonstrates scientific concepts through the use of laboratory equipment, experiments, and instructional technology.
Incorporates components of a workshop classroom model (e.g., mini-lesson, guided practice, small group work, conferencing, and share/reflection).
Integrates technology meaningfully to enhance student learning.
Integrates and supports outdoor education curriculum, when applicable.
Creates yearly curriculum plans and maintains detailed daily lesson plans.
Keeps current with subject matter research, instructional best practices, and curriculumdevelopment.
Lab & Classroom Management
Instructs students in the proper use, care, and safe handling of equipment, plant, and animal life.
Ensures safe storage and responsible use of materials, equipment, and tools.
Establishes effective classroom management and utilizes restorative practices and the school's student behavior response protocol.
Supervises students during recesses, lunches, and before/after school as assigned by the administration.
Student Assessment & Growth
Regularly assesses student learning using a variety of formative and summative measures.
Maintains accurate and timely assessment documentation.
Analyzes student data to inform instruction and differentiate learning experiences.
Actively engages SEL professional development and implementation.
Community & Collaboration
Leads a student advisory group.
Participates in regular and effective communication with parents as partners in students' education.
Actively participates in school enrollment management initiatives.
Attends all professional development and faculty meetings.
General Responsibilities
Follows guidelines for fulfillment of duties as described in the Employee Handbook
Performs other duties as assigned.
Terms of Employment:
This is an exempt position. Competitive compensation commensurate with experience. Benefits package includes, but is not limited to, medical, dental, vision, basic life insurance, long-term disability, and a retirement plan (with up to 7% employer match). Hours on campus are expected from 7:15 am–4:00 pm. As an exempt employee, work outside of these hours, including nights and weekends, may be required to fulfill the essential job functions of this position.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelor of Arts/Science degree (required)
K–8 Teaching Credential (preferred)
Experience teaching multiple-subjects (preferred)
Live Scan and TB clearance

Sitting atop 66 acres of the Santa Monica Mountains, BHS is the oldest PS-8, co-ed independent school in Los Angeles. Its campus is a serene retreat from the bustle of nearby neighborhoods, and embodies what Berkeley Hall School offers its approx. 300 students – a safe, supportive, and close-knit community.
