Position Description
Wellington seeks a dynamic, student-centered long-term substitute teacher for 5th-grade science. The successful candidate will have a love and passion for working with middle schoolers and supporting both their academic and social-emotional development. Candidates should demonstrate an ability to operate effectively in diverse environments, interact successfully with people from widely varying backgrounds, and employ culturally responsive pedagogy to create an inclusive and equitable classroom community. This position involves teaching four sections of 5th-grade science classes, serving as an advisor to 5th graders, and contributing to a professional culture of care, collaboration, creativity, and collegiality.
Key Responsibilities
Teach four sections of 5th-grade science in the middle school.
Serve as an advisor to 12 5th-grade students and facilitate weekly advisory lessons.
Actively participate in the school community, collaborating with colleagues and contributing to a positive and dynamic academic environment.
Communicate effectively with parents and caregivers of students and advisees to keep them aware of student progress.
Model a growth mindset in all aspects of professional endeavors.
Position Requirements
Experience working with middle-school students
A high level of content knowledge and proficiency in science (bachelor’s/master’s degree preferred)
Understanding of child development and educational needs for students in grades 5 through 8
Demonstrated experience in
cultural competency in teaching practices.
managing a classroom with a focus on creating a positive and inclusive classroom culture.
differentiating instruction to meet the diverse needs of students.
assessing and documenting student growth through observations, record-keeping, and various formal assessments.
implementing an integrated curriculum using informed and innovative approaches.
