Falmouth Academy is a small, independent co-educational day and 5-day boarding school on Cape Cod, serving students in grades 7 through 12. This is a potential opening. We are beginning a search now to build a strong candidate pool. The position may be full-time or part-time, depending on final staffing decisions. We seek an educator who can help students read closely, think historically, write persuasively, and engage in principled discussion about the past and its connection to the present.
Position Summary
Falmouth Academy is seeking a history teacher to join a dynamic, dedicated team of educational professionals. Preferred candidates will have an academic background in history as well as a record of demonstrated success working with young people in education or a related field. The ideal candidate is an enthusiastic individual who values the richness of an educational experience that includes people with diverse backgrounds, perspectives, and identities, someone who has demonstrated a passion for history and research and for teaching that builds interest in, enthusiasm for, and mastery of the subject. In addition, the candidate will have the capacity to contribute to the life of the school in co-curricular areas.
Primary Responsibilities
Teaching and Learning (Full-Time and Part-Time)
Prepare materials and teach history, social studies, humanities, or other courses for grades 7–12 (final assignments based on experience and program needs).
Design and deliver an inquiry-driven, skills-centered curriculum that builds:
historical thinking and argumentation
evidence-based writing and research
civil, discussion-based learning, and student voice
Use varied assessment practices (analytical writing, projects, presentations, document-based work) and provide timely feedback.
Differentiate instruction to support a range of learners and uphold high expectations for all students.
Maintain student attendance records, grades, and other required records
Communicate effectively with students, families, and colleagues as appropriate to the role.
Collaboration and Community (Full-Time and Part-Time)
Collaborate with colleagues to strengthen curriculum, share instructional practices, and support students.
Contribute to interdisciplinary learning opportunities where appropriate (e.g., humanities connections to science, ethics, technology, and the arts), consistent with FA’s setting and partnerships.
Advising and Program Participation (Full-Time)
Advise students on academic and other matters in accordance with the School’s mission.
Participate fully in faculty responsibilities and community life, including meetings, events, trips, and other duties.
Teach an elective and coach or lead a co-curricular activity, as part of full-time participation in the program.
Other duties, as assigned.
Qualifications and Attributes
Bachelor’s degree in History, Education, or a related field.
Enthusiastic interest in teaching, motivating, coaching, and mentoring high school students
Strength in teaching writing, reading, and research skills within history/social studies.
A student-centered approach, strong classroom culture, and commitment to belonging and inclusive pedagogy.
Ability to meet classroom, advisory, and extracurricular obligations on a consistent schedule.
Effective communicator, both verbally and in writing, with students, colleagues, and parents.
Compensation and Benefits
Compensation is competitive and commensurate with experience and role scope (full-time vs. part-time). Benefits eligibility is based on position status.
