Job Description
The 9th Grade Humanities Teacher at Charleston Collegiate School is responsible for facilitating an integrated English and Social Studies curriculum that challenges students to explore the complexities of the human experience. This role requires an educator who can balance high academic rigor with a deep commitment to Social-Emotional Learning (SEL), helping students navigate the transition into the Upper School. The ideal candidate will bridge historical contexts with current affairs, utilizing South Carolina Social Studies standards and Common Core Literacy standards to prepare students for college-level inquiry and global citizenship.
Key Responsibilities
Design and implement a rigorous Humanities curriculum that integrates Human Geography and Literature, focusing on the development of a variety of writing, critical reading, and geographic reasoning skills.
Align coursework for ELA and SC Social Studies standards (Human Geography), ensuring students master evidence-based argumentation and skills to interpret human-environment relationships and spatial patterns.
Facilitate civil discourse on current events, helping students connect historical patterns to contemporary global issues and diverse cultural perspectives.
Serve as a 9th-grade Advisor, implementing a dedicated SEL curriculum that supports executive functioning, self-advocacy, and community belonging during the pivotal first year of upper school.
Lead intensive writing instruction, scaffolding the transition from middle school summaries to complex, analytical high school writing that includes evidence-based literary analysis, argumentative writing, and research composition aligned to grade-level standards.
Employ a variety of assessment strategies, including Harkness discussions, projects, and other performance-based tasks, to evaluate and support student learning and growth.
Work closely with the Upper School team to vertically align the Humanities scope and sequence, ensuring a consistent climb in rigor from 9th through 12th grade.
Actively name and shine a light on a variety of voices within history and literature, fostering a classroom environment where every student feels seen and valued.
Use data-driven feedback to monitor student progress, balancing a high bar for achievement with the high care necessary for adolescent development.
Qualification Requirements
Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in English, History, or Secondary Education (Master’s preferred).
At least 3 years of teaching experience in a high school setting, preferably within an independent school.
Proven experience in mentorship or advisory roles with a strong understanding of adolescent development and SEL practices.
Exceptional written and oral communication skills; ability to facilitate complex, sensitive discussions with presence and calm.
Proficiency in Google Suite/Learning Management Systems (LMS) to streamline student organization and communication.
A team-oriented mindset with the ability to work across departments to create interdisciplinary connections.
A strong work ethic and the ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality and professional boundaries.
