Durham Academy is accepting applications for an Upper School Technical Theatre Director/Teacher to begin August 1, 2026. Candidates should have some successful experience teaching or working with students. All candidates must have a bachelor’s degree in Technical Theatre or a related field; master’s degree or commensurate experience preferred.  Our ideal candidate will feel comfortable assuming the following roles:

Responsibilities Include:

• Teacher for 1-2 sections of Technical Theatre
• Scenic/Lighting Designer and Technical Director for US Performing Arts
• Theatre: Fall Play and Winter Musical
• Dance: Winter and Spring concerts
• Music: In The Pocket (3+ shows), Ensembles (Winter & Spring concerts), A Cappella Jam
• Recruiter/teacher/supervisor for student technical crew
• Technical Director for Kenan Auditorium/Scene Shop
• Upper School community programming Technical Support

Founded in 1933, Durham Academy is an all-gender, independent day school with 1,267 students in Pre-kindergarten through grade 12 on three campuses. About Durham Academy

Durham Academy was founded in 1933 as the Calvert Method School. The founders, George Watts Hill and his wife Ann McCulloch Hill, established the school as a private, independent school to educate their children and others in Durham. The school’s initial teaching philosophy (and its name) was based on the Calvert School in Baltimore, Maryland, which Ann McCulloch Hill attended as a child. In 1959, the school ended its affiliation with the Calvert School, changed its name to Durham Academy, and began an expansion that led to the first high school graduating class in 1975. The school has continued to grow over the years, evolving into one of the top independent schools in the state and nation. In preparing students exceptionally well for college and life beyond, DA focuses on the acquisition of knowledge paired with the development of skills, critical judgment, and intellectual curiosity.
