Roland Park Country School is seeking a full-time Upper School English Teacher for the 2026-27 school year. This teacher reports to the Upper School Head. The ideal candidate possesses the ability to foster and nurture a learning environment that is engaging and accessible to a broad and diverse range of students.? This creative educator should enjoy working collaboratively with colleagues and writing and revising curriculum.
The RPCS English Department commits to planning instruction that is relevant to the experiences of students today and in their futures while providing venues for discussions that can impact their minds in large and visible ways. English teachers at RPCS commit to building connections with all students. and hearing their voices and responding to their concerns, inquiries, and truth with honesty.. Teachers will impart specific and ready feedback that encourages questions and revisions until learning objectives are met. Finally, teachers commit to setting high standards while challenging themselves to find creative and novel ways to guide every student toward achievement.
The Upper School English program is designed to foster a student’s growth and confidence as a thinker, reader, writer, and individual. In a supportive environment, students are asked to make connections between the issues and themes highlighted in literature to those found in their own worlds. Using fiction and non-fiction texts, as well as classic and modern writings, students strengthen their reading skills on a literal level. As critical thinking skills are emerging and maturing in this age group, they use strategies to uncover deeper meaning.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Build a strong classroom community with positive communication skills.
Build an open and trusting relationship with students, colleagues, and families.
Plan, assess, and teach English to RPCS Upper School students, as well as in our coordinated Tri-School program with Gilman and Bryn Mawr Schools.
Design learning targets, scope and sequence, and pacing guides as part of the All-School curriculum mapping process.
Collaborate with English Department colleagues.
Attend Upper School division and department meetings.
Organize and update the learning management system for applicable courses, including course overviews, assignments, grades, and comments.
Engage in ongoing self-reflection and professional growth, actively seeking opportunities to enhance teaching practices, cultural competence, and understanding of diverse learners.
Participate in the faculty review process; observations, feedback conferences, self-evaluation, and goal setting to refine practice.
Serve as an academic advisor.
Potentially serve as an advisor to student clubs or extracurricular activities.
Other reasonable duties as assigned from time to time by the Upper School Head or Head of School.
WORK CONDITIONS:
The Upper School English Teacher is a full-time, 10 month exempt position.
The individual in this position is expected to work during all hours as may be assigned by the School and during other hours for events and activities.
The Upper School English Teacher is expected to perform their job duties on campus unless otherwise permitted by the Head of School.
BACKGROUND CHECK:
A background check (including criminal records and employment history review) must be completed satisfactorily before any candidate can begin work with RPCS. Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may affect the application status or start of employment.
TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS:
Occasional travel may be required for field trips and other program-related activities.
COMPENSATION DISCLOSURE: In accordance with Maryland's Equal Pay for Equal Work Act, we are committed to providing transparent wage information for all posted job opportunities. The salary range for this position is $54,500-87,500 annually. Compensation is determined based on factors such as Experience, Qualifications, and Internal equity.

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Bachelor’s degree in English or related field. Graduate degree and secondary expertise in another field preferred.
Minimum of three years of demonstrated excellence in teaching.
Familiarity with creating differentiated learning experiences aligned with formative assessments.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Remain in a stationary position, often sitting or standing for extended periods of time.
Repeat motion of wrists, hands, and fingers to operate standard office equipment, such as a computer, printer, and phone.
Requires visual acuity to read a variety of written materials.
Physical agility: stand, kneel, walk, run, push/pull, squat, twist, turn, bend, stoop, reach overhead, crouch, and can respond to emergencies.
Must be able to move around and access all parts of the campus upon request, which includes gym, turf, fields, dining hall, etc.
Occasionally ascend and descend stairs in emergency situations.
