Smith Street Maternelle is a French-immersion preschool community in Brooklyn serving children ages 2–6 across multiple campuses. Our classrooms are grounded in progressive education traditions including Bank Street, Montessori, and Reggio Emilia.
Smith Street Workshop is our academic tutoring and enrichment center serving elementary, middle, and high school students. The Workshop provides individualized tutoring, small group instruction, and academic support through both our tutoring center and school partnerships.
Together, these programs employ a diverse, international team of teachers, tutors, and administrators committed to thoughtful, child-centered education.
We are seeking a highly organized, detail-oriented Human Resources Specialist to support day-to-day HR operations across both programs.
Responsibilities
- Maintain personnel files and confidential HR records
- Manage I-9s and employment eligibility documentation
- Track visa/work authorization records when applicable
- Monitor required trainings and compliance documentation
- Post open positions and coordinate candidate communications
- Schedule interviews and prepare offer letters and employment agreements
- Support onboarding in Justworks and coordinate orientation and training steps
- Coordinate offboarding documentation and recordkeeping
- Maintain employee records, benefits updates, PTO balances, and payroll-related documentation
- Serve as a first point of contact for employee administrative questions
- Track contracts, renewals, handbook acknowledgements, and HR reporting
Compensation & Benefits
- Salary: $68,000–$75,000

Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree preferred
- 3–5 years of experience in HR administration or HR operations
- Experience with Justworks or a similar HRIS
- Strong understanding of HR documentation and compliance
- Excellent organizational, written, and interpersonal skills
- High level of discretion and professionalism
- Experience in schools, nonprofits, or education organizations strongly preferred
- Comfort in a bilingual French-English environment is welcome; French language skills are helpful but not required
