Position Description
Our school is a place where students—infants through seniors in high school—are encouraged to wonder big, love boldly, and live with purpose. As an Episcopal, mission?driven community, we lead with love and believe in nurturing both hearts and minds. We’re looking for a Director of Religious & Spiritual Life who is equal parts pastoral presence, creative educator, compassionate guide, and joyful community-builder. This role will promote the values of the Episcopal tradition—intellectual inquiry, inclusivity, moral formation, and respect for diverse faiths—while nurturing the spiritual development of students from infancy through 12th grade. The Director collaborates closely with employees, administrators, students, and families to cultivate a school culture grounded in compassion, integrity, service, and belonging fostering an environment where individuals of all faith backgrounds feel welcomed and respected.
Key Responsibilities
School Responsibilities
Serve as primary religious and spiritual leader for all St. Paul’s Schools and its divisions
Articulate and steward a shared vision of Episcopal identity, spiritual formation, and faith practice across all divisions.
Serve as main Chaplain for the boys’ upper school division leading chapel, pastoral care, and student/faculty spiritual formation.
Supervise, mentor, and support the Assistant Chaplain and Lead Chaplains.
Collaborate with Heads of School, Division Heads, and senior leadership on mission integration and community formation.
Work with academic leadership and religion faculty to develop and teach religion curricula aligned with Episcopal values and age?appropriate pedagogy.
In partnership with SP and SPSG Chaplains, provide pastoral care to students, employees and families offering support in moments of joy, challenge, and transition.
Collaborate with the community and belonging team to support community through events and conversations and ensure intercultural competency.
Episcopal Ordination-Specific Responsibilities
Officiate and coordinate weddings, funerals, memorial services, baptisms, and confirmations connected to the school community (as appropriate and in consultation with families).
Serve as the school’s primary liaison to the Diocese, Bishop, and wider Episcopal Church.
Partner with Rector at Old St. Paul’s Church for pastoral care and events held at Old St. Paul’s
Oversee sacramental life and Episcopal observances (e.g., Eucharist, Holy Days, pastoral rites).
Ensure compliance with Episcopal canon law and best practices related to ministry in schools.
Qualifications
Master’s degree in Divinity, Theology, Religious Studies, or related field.
Ordination or eligibility for ordination in the Episcopal Church (or extensive experience working in Episcopal schools).
Demonstrated experience in a school or church setting, teaching and/or ministering to youth.
Ability to support the school's diversity and inclusion efforts by displaying a continuous commitment to developing the attitudes, knowledge, and skills (intercultural competence) to engage in appropriate and effective communication with students, colleagues, and families from diverse backgrounds and perspectives. We desire candidates who will contribute to the school's efforts to continue creating a more inclusive and equitable community where all individuals can develop a sense of belonging.
Understanding of and commitment to Episcopal school identity, including experience working with students across a wide age range (infants–12th grade).
Strong communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
Optional Additional Opportunity at Old St. Paul’s Church
Saint Paul’s Episcopal Church in downtown Baltimore is the church that founded and is connected to The Saint Paul’s Schools. They are looking for part time clergy help and is optional work on top of the Director of Religious and Spiritual Life position on campus. This priestly role is negotiable and could range from an occasional Sunday presence to more pastoral, liturgical, and programmatic involvement. This would be over and above your Director of Religious and Spiritual Life role at The St. Paul’s Schools. This additional responsibility would depend on the scope and hours mutually decided upon ranging from $5,000 to $25,000.

The St. Paul’s Schools has a compensation scale based on direct years of experience and degree held. For this opportunity, our salary range is $85,000 - to $100,000 annually. Candidates with additional experience or qualifications may be offered a salary outside of the range shown.
