Oldfields School in Sparks Glencoe, Maryland is an international all-girls boarding and day school, grades 8-12, established in 1867. We are looking for the best candidate to fill the position of the Dean of Academics, a full-time 12-month senior administrator. The Dean of Academics at Oldfields encourages a culture of academic rigor, intellectual curiosity and a sense of belonging. The Dean works collaboratively with faculty, advisors, residential staff, families, and students to ensure a cohesive, challenging and supportive academic program for all students.
Key Responsibilities:
Articulate and implement a clear, forward-thinking vision for academic excellence aligned with the School’s mission
Lead the ongoing refinement of curriculum across all departments
Align instruction with research-based best practices in girls’ education
Promote interdisciplinary collaboration and innovation in teaching and learning
Oversee academic scheduling, course offerings, academic policies and our experiential May Program
Recruit, hire, supervise, and evaluate faculty in collaboration with the Head of School.
Promote a culture of professional growth through mentoring, coaching, and professional development
Lead regular faculty and department meetings
Support faculty in implementing culturally responsive, inclusive pedagogy
Oversee academic advising systems for both boarding and day students.
Monitor student academic progress and coordinate academic interventions where needed.
Partners with college counselor, learning specialist, and residential life staff to support each student.
Collaborate with residential life leadership to align evening study programs and academic support
Lead accreditation processes and academic reporting requirements
Communicate clearly and proactively in partnership with families regarding academic policies, expectations, and student progress
Other duties/expectations:
Member of Executive Administrative Team
Teaches one or two classes
Creates the academic budget and yearly academic calendar
Oversees athletic department, health center, technology department and library
Is visible, present and engaged in the life of the School
Responsible for creating parent-teacher conference schedule, honor rolls, school awards presented at annual Awards Banquet
Living on campus is required for this position
Qualifications:
Bachelor’s required and Master’s degree preferred
Minimum of 3-5 years of teaching experience and demonstrated leadership in an independent or boarding school setting
Deep understanding of curriculum design, instructional leadership and faculty supervision
Experience working in girls’ education is strongly preferred
Exceptional communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills
Appreciates and embraces the all-encompassing and interactive culture of a boarding school community
Respects the traditions and purpose of an all-girls secondary school education
Represents the School in a positive manner, maintaining an attitude that encourages teamwork and personal responsibility
Experience in the areas of socio-emotional learning and/or neuroscience with an emphasis on adolescent girl development is preferred
