Abington Friends School is a Quaker day school located just outside of Philadelphia. The school serves students from ages 3 years to 12th grade in three divisions. Rooted in Friends principles of collaborative inquiry, peaceful resolution of conflict, equality, community and integrity, AFS is an unusually vibrant and diverse learning community. More information is available at www.abingtonfriends.net.
We place a high value on diversity of race, background, religion, ability, sexuality and gender identity in our community and see the hiring process at AFS as one which allows us to nurture, sustain and extend the diversity that is fundamental to our excellence as a Friends School.
Position Description:
AFS is seeking a visionary educator dedicated to helping students in grades 5–8 navigate the intersection of technical proficiency and ethical humanity. This role is not simply about "teaching computers"; it is about fostering digital wellness, critical thinking, and technical fluency. The ideal candidate will empower students to be creators and critics rather than just consumers, while guiding the broader school community toward a balanced relationship with technology.
The Computer & Technology Specialist will report to the Middle School Director as a member of the middle school faculty. They will also work closely with our Chief Technology Officer. Two primary components of the position will be teaching middle school technology courses and running a robotics (or related) club for middle school students after school. In addition to direct work with students, there will be an expectation of working closely with the middle school faculty: brainstorming meaningful uses of technology, co-teaching for particular projects, and providing professional learning opportunities. Lastly, the ideal candidate will also demonstrate a comfort and enthusiasm for connecting with middle school parents for information sharing, workshops or training.
Abington Friends Middle School serves students in grades 5 - 8. We use Blackbaud as our primary method of record keeping and reporting. Students and teachers use the Google Suite as our primary LMS. We are 1:1, providing each student with a Chromebook.
The core responsibilities of the position will be:
Middle School Technology Curriculum Design
Partner with the technology office, administration, and faculty to assess programmatic need.
Work during the 2026 summer to develop a scope and sequence across four grade levels that explores the intersection of technical skills and the social, emotional, and ethical impacts of technological innovations.
Classroom Instruction (Grades 5–8)
Teach engaging semester-long courses in grades 5 - 8.
Integrate technical skills (programming, productivity software) with mindful media skills (ethics, online safety, and media literacy).
Assess student work and provide feedback through individual assignments and semester report cards.
Faculty Support & Integration
Act as a pedagogical partner to faculty, assisting in the meaningful and mindful integration of technology into diverse subject areas.
Provide ongoing professional development on emerging tools, AI literacy, and best practices for classroom tech management.
Support faculty and administration in optimizing the use of the Blackbaud as a student information system.
Community Programming & Leadership
Design and facilitate workshops for students, faculty and families regarding balanced technology use, social media's impact on development, and healthy home tech habits.
Serve as a thought leader within the school to help shape institutional policies regarding digital citizenship, AI use, personal devices, and digital academic integrity.
Middle School Responsibilities
Run an affinity or alliance space as part of the Conscious Communities program.
Run a club period (during the school day) about a technology related project.
Run an afterschool robotics and/or STEM club one to two days per week.
Lunch and recess duties and supervision/coordination of other special events.
Values/Characteristics:
Abington Friends School seeks a collaborative, creative, forward-thinking educator with a deep commitment to social justice, a desire to integrate curriculum, and a commitment to personal and professional growth. Our diverse community demands a candidate with demonstrated cultural competency and a desire to explore issues of equity and inclusion.
Educational background:
A Bachelor’s degree in Education, Computer Science, Educational Technology, or a related field (Master’s preferred).
3–5 years of experience working with middle school aged students. A demonstrated ability to translate complex technical ideas into age-appropriate instruction.
Proficiency in various platforms (Google Workspace, Blackbaud), foundational programming concepts (e.g., Scratch, Python, or Swift), and robotics, as well as a good conceptual understanding of artificial intelligence and data science. The ideal candidate will have a proven ability to build a scope and sequence from scratch, ideally in the areas of technology and ethics.
Ability to design a developmentally appropriate robotics club/team.
High level of comfort leadingchallenging conversations with students and parents regarding digital behavior and mental health. A passion for "Mindful Media"—prioritizing student well-being and intentionality over tech-adoption for tech's sake.
Interested candidates should submit a cover letter, resume and a list of 3 references. No phone calls, please.
